Our commercial copy of "Laugh, Laugh" by The Beau Brummels (Autumn 8) states a time of (2:45), but actually runs (2:51).

Interestingly, Jim reports he has a yellow label commercial 45 copy of "Laugh Laugh" from the Autumn label with an actual run time of 2:53, not 2:48 as stated on the label. Based on Paul Haney's info, it appears we have now accounted for two different 45 pressings.
I notice the database shows "Laugh Laugh" on the Magic Hollow box set (Rhino Handmade 7892) with a "promo single version" comment and a run time of 3:09. I asked Jim if he had a promo 45 handy to obtain some additional details, but he says he doesn't have one.
Does anyone have a promo 45 copy who can confirm the run time information?

Todd, I am far from certain here, but after forwarding that info to you a while back, I thought there might've been a chance that my commercial 45 copy of "Laugh, Laugh" may be a later 45 re-pressing, despite all the original 1965 label/catalog info matching up with the books. The quality of the vinyl just strikes me as a little too good, as opposed to the other Autumn 45's I own from the era - I'm just throwing the possibility out there in this case.

My promotional 45 of Autumn Record No. 8, Laugh Laugh by the Beau Brummels (with the same song on both sides) has a listed time of (2:45) and an actual time of (2:51). Deadwax info reads as: (Monarch symbol) 8A Re1 /delta\ 55142. The same stamper was used for both sides.

Thanks much for the additional input, Jim and Tom. What I also find interesting is the 3:09 so-called "promo single version" runs at least :07 longer than on all database CDs containing "Laugh Laugh", including ones where where the song ends cold. Does anyone recall hearing this slightly longer promo single version on the radio?

Jim, I've also wondered about that for decades! I've encountered a few pressing variations for the first two Beau Brummels singles - "Laugh, Laugh" and "Just A Little" - and have wondered whether or not some of them are original. To that end, I've made a label scan collage which includes a few notes. Here are some specifics of the six labels in the collage:
A - This is the copy of "Laugh, Laugh" I bought in 1965. The sound quality is good, though the vinyl quality is not. Actual time is (2:51.5). Deadwax: an unreadable bit of characters which is probably the name of the mastering house - which I'll call UMH - followed by "AUTUMN - TEMPO #8A RE-1". B-side deadwax: " same UMH logo, followed by " STILL IN LOVE WITH-YOU-BABE". Autumn Records logo is a deep rust-colored "autumn" and similar-colored leaf in a brown spiral.
B - After wearing out copy "A," I bought copy B circa 1969 to replace it. The audio quality is not as good as that on copy "A," particularly on the sybillants, but the vinyl quality is somewhat better. Actual time is (2:51). Deadwax: a faint hint of the UMH logo, followed by "AUTUMN - 8A". B-side deadwax: same UMH logo, followed by "AUTUMN 8 B". The stampers on this issue are not the same as on copy "A." Autumn Records logo is a red-colored "autumn" and red leaf in a spiral composed of black dots.
C - I bought this bootleg copy in 1979 for a radio station's oldies library, as it was the only readily-available copy at the time. This copy looks like many boots from that era: pitted vinyl surface with a distinctive groove pattern, blurry, misaligned graphics with smeared ink splotches, and a noticeable raised rim "ring" in the label area. The audio is pretty poor when played in stereo, with lots of sybillant crackling, like it was mastered from a mono 45 played in stereo. It actually sounds fairly decent when summed to mono, though. Actual time is (2:53.5). Deadwax: "AUTUMN 8A", and a "340" directly across the label from it. Bright yellow label with very fuzzy red "autumn" & leaf/black dot spiral logo design.
D,E & F pertain to "Just A Little":
D - 1965 copy bought in the Midwest. Same pressing plant and label color scheme as "A" above. Deadwax: same unidentifiable ("UMH") mastering logo as in "A" and "B" above, followed by "AUTUMN - #10-A".
E - 1965 West Coast Monarch styrene pressing. Spiral is still brown, but the "autumn" and leaf are both red. Deadwax: "10-A (Monarch Records logo) (delta number)56595".
F - This is the one that has me scratching my head. I bought this yellow-label copy at a record show in the '80s. The "autumn" and leaf are red, with a black-dot spiral. Like the "B" copy of "Laugh, Laugh" above, the type font is lifted directly from the Monarch pressings, but this copy is pressed on high-quality vinyl that is more typical of the '70s and '80s than it is of the sixties; closer to a Columbia Santa Maria vinyl pressing, although not quite of that grade of vinyl. Stranger yet, the stampers used for this pressing are identical to those used on both sides of the 1965 "D" copy. Is this a legit 1965-66 pressing? Since Warners bought Autumn in 1966, the possibility of later Autumn pressings would seem to be remote. Does anybody know the whole story??
I never recall hearing anything on the radio in 1965 other than the standard 2:51 issue.

While checking out the BSN page on the new Eric CD "Hard To Find Jukebox
Classics 1956-1959: 29 More Amazing Stereo Hits", I noticed TomDiehl1 had
posted a vinyl dub of a 45 that not only ends cold (I've heard the cold
ending for years), but has an extra 2 bars of instrumental break. This version
I've NEVER heard! This version seems to be on Rhino Handmade 7892 Magic
Hollow (Box Set), and runs 3:09. The label timing for this 45 is 2:48.
Maybe this is how it was recorded, and they thought it was too long, so they
both edited it and faded it for later 45s?
Anyway, this deserves a mention here as a most unique find, that seems to
have gone rather "unnoticed", or rather not too discussed.

And that longer version is on a stock 45,
not a promo.

Yeah, must be mislabeled as a promo. Here's what I have put together
regarding this track:
early commercial 45s (white with black text and red logo) state a run time
of 2:48 but run 3:07 (longer instrumental break and cold ending); later
white/black/red commercial 45s state a run time of 2:48 and run 2:51
(edited instrumental break and fade); some later (gold label) 45s state a run
time of 2:30 but run 2:51 (these 45s had the a- and b-side timings
reversed), while others state a run time of 2:45 or 2:48 and run 2:51; some
DJ copies state a run time of 2:45 and feature the song on both sides
running 2:51, while others state a run time of 2:48 but run 2:51;
"Introducing The Beau Brummels" LP features the edit/fade version;
unknown when the edited ends cold version was first issued, but it was
issued on 1986 Rhino VA CD "Nuggets - Classics from the Psychedelic
Sixties" and 1986 Warner Special Products VA CD "Highs Of The Sixties",
and may have been issued on 1986 Rhino LP "The Best Of The Beau
Brummels" Golden Archive Series, as that LP was mastered by Bill Inglot
