I had never noticed this until today, but the "Radio Edit" of "She Will Be Loved" is a unique mix. You can tell the difference right away, because it completely eliminates the bass drum throughout the intro and first verse. It also fades out at the end instead of ending cold.

Does anyone know which version was the "hit"?

Ed, yes the song was recorded that way.

The surface noise on the intro is also present in the LP version but it's not as evident there, presumably due to the mix differences. But rest assured, it is supposed to sound raspy and clicky.

I had assumed the version you cited was the hit. Two Hot AC stations played that version a decade ago.. My LP "Songs About Jane" has the sustained cold ending with "Good-byyyyyye" on it.

Also I had always thought that the song has that raspy, clicky sound at the beginning too. If there is surface noise on my LP (as in natively...lol), I can hardly notice it, but I remember the characteristics you describe from having heard the song first on MP3.

It took me a while to track down the promo CD single of this one, but I finally found it a few months ago. Here are the details:

82876-60950-2
1. non-described version (4:17 listed; 4:19 actual)
2. Radio Edit (3:59 listed; actual 4:00)
3. Call Out Hook

Track 1 is a remix compared to the LP version, although it does end cold like the LP. Track 2 ("Radio Edit") is a shorter version of track 1. This remixed version also has intended vinyl noise on the intro (the "rasps and clicks" Ed refers to above).
