A couple of years back I came across a website that listed Whitney Houston remixes on CD, and to my surprise there was an entry for "Just The Lonely Talking Again" from the 1987 "Whitney" album.
I didn't even know the song been released as a single, and to date I have not seen it sold anywhere or even a photo of it.
The catalog number supposedly is ASCD-9697.
Track listing:
extended remix 7.15
edited remix 5.56
single edit 5.05
album version 5.30
Per the number, the promo CD must have been issued in between "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "Love Will Save The Day". I read that a promo 12" single was also released.
I do have an mp3 file with the extended remix, and there are vocals not present on the original version and instrumental parts, neither of which could have been recreated from the original version, so I'm sure it's official.
Does anyone have any more information on the CD, chart info if exists, etc?

I do remember seeing that promo single long, long ago, in the mid-90s. It never charted, and was not commercially released as a single anywhere in the world. I think it wasn't doing well in airplay, so it was pulled.

Wow, thanks Brian. There must be very few copies around because I see the other promo cd singles from that album quite often.

Has anybody ever received this promo CD at the radio
station? I'm still intrigued by it, in 15 years it's the
first time I see this for sale online, it's currently
selling at Ebay for (of course) a very high price.

Wow, its starting price was $1, and now, 22 bids later, it's at $365! And there's still one more day to go before the auction closes.

To Brian W:
I'm pretty sure this track was released to Urban AC formats & Quiet Storm programmers & not really meant to chart. I don't think it was meant to be the 5th official single & then pulled (switched with "Love will save The Day") because of lack of support.
Of course I could be wrong...

You could always buy it and resell it. Current price is $500.

Andy, I believe you to be 100% correct here. We were never
serviced with a "Just The Lonely Talking Again" promo CD single at our
Top 40 station in 1988. "Niche format" promotion (such as the Urban
AC/Quiet Storm formats thoery that Andy espouses here) isn't something
we obviously discuss a whole lot here, on a Top 40 Board. But labels
trying to maximize profits in any way possible was/is like breathing to
them, and showing such "niche" formats a little "specialty release love"
has always gone a long way.

discogs is now showing what appears to be a commercial 7" picture sleeve (with a Jermaine Jackson duet on the b-side)!

I'm leaning towards this having been a canceled single release, not a format-specific promotion.
Notice that the back of that 45 sleeve states "This single is also available as a Cassette Single". The promo 12" on discogs appears to be a fully fledged commercial maxi single complete with barcode.
There's also a hype sticker affixed to a CD long box from midway through the promotion of the Whitney album that announces "Just The Lonely Talking Again" as her new single (after "Where Do Broken Hearts Go")

Did anyone here ever manage to track down the 5:05 "Single Version" or have any details on it?
(Sorry, I realize this isn't a Top 40 hit and therefore off-topic, but it's really difficult finding details on this one and I'm fascinated by it.)

What did the auction sell for a few years back?

The single version is just an early fade of the album
version.

Wow, so there WAS a 45 and picture sleeve for this?
It probably didn't get past promo stage. It must also
be insanely rare - there are several 45 collectors on
this forum - has anyone actually ever SEEN one?
My first thought is that there's another one I'll
never be able to find. I remember reading in
Billboard around this time that this would be a
single. Not that I don't like the
song, but I'm surprised Arista would consider
releasing this - after four No. 1 singles, did they
really think this would be a strong follow-up? "Love
Will Save the Day" is a much stronger song.
For the record, there were also promos pressed of
"Queen of the Night", from "The Bodyguard" - but at
least I've seen that one!

Ah! This may explain why there was an unusual pause in the release rhythm of
that last single from Whitney: "Love will Save the Day" debuted 9 weeks after
"Broken Hearts" peaked… an eternity in those days (compare MJ's follow-up to
Dirty Diana debuting 3 weeks after DD's peak).
They must have planned JTLTA as the follow-up, decided against it, and gone
with LWSTD, creating the slight delay.

Yes, I know a collector who has both the commercial US
12" single and promo CD Single. You can see photos of the
12" sleeve here:

Hi people,
Thanks for all the additional information and Discogs
references - it's a fascinating "semi-phantom"
release!
On a similar topic, wasn't it somewhat difficult to
find the single "Thinking Of You" in stores? That was
the release worked to Urban formats only from her
first album.
Anybody have any stories on that one?
Andy

I've actually got two US copies of the 45 and picture
sleeve. It's a little harder to find than most of her
others but doesn't seem to be that difficult to
locate.
Maybe others have had different experiences?
