I first brought this topic up on the "Single/Album version distinctions..." message thread a while back. It has been determined that the single version of Brother Beyond's "The Girl I Used to Know" runs 4:11, while the album version clocks in at 4:21.

I have the promo CD single copy of the song on EMI DPRO #04521. The track listing and run times are as follows:

1) Single version - 4:11 (printed time: 3:59)
2) Power Mix - 4:19 (printed time: 4:25)
3) Club Mix - 7:31 (printed time: 7:40)

According to the database, there's a version of the song running 3:51 on the various artist CD Decades of Dance: The 90's (EMI-Capitol Music Special Markets 19578) with the accompanying comment: (dj edit). The www.allmusic.com website claims that the version of "The Girl I Used to Know" appearing on the Decades of Dance disc is the "radio mix edited version". Was there another promo DJ single released for this song that contains this 3:51 version?

The comment I entered was taken directly from the cd jacket and that description is "radio mix edited version" so it could be either an edit or early fade of the single version.

I thought I'd recall this thread since the promo CD single info I posted years ago for Brother Beyond's "The Girl I Used to Know" may have been accidentally overlooked for database consideration.

I'd also like to ask once again if anyone has seen the 3:51 "radio mix edited version" as listed on the Decades of Dance: The 90's (EMI-Capitol Music Special Markets 19578) CD on a different promo single release? If not, then perhaps the current database comment for this song could be more specifically revised to read:

("radio mix edited version" according to the CD jacket)

I'm suggesting this because it is a drastically different mix than the single and album version and I've never heard it on the radio before.

Todd, although it is certainly possible a rare, second promo CD single exists for this song, the only one that both my friend Tom and I own is the exact same one you describe above. As I recall around this time (1990), EMI (this song's label) was just about the first major label to stop producing commercial/promo 7" singles, so it's not real likely that the version you seek exists on that format, either. Perhaps on a 12" single? Otherwise, I'm betting that the "radio mix edited version" could be making its worldwide debut on that V/A CD comp. I've also learned the hard way not to overly trust descriptions that appear on CD jackets!   :)

There was no 7" that I know of. As for a 12", I have a promo 12" (SPRO 04560) which has a track list of...

1) Pettibone Dub (4:53)
2) Power Mix (4:18)
3) Club Mix (7:32)
4) Shep's Dub (5:37)

all timing are listed (not necessarily actual)

Thanks, Jim and cmmmbase. It's looking pretty safe to say at this point that the so-called "radio mix edited version" never appeared on any promo single copies.

As a supplement to the promo CD single info that has now been entered into the database for "The Girl I Used to Know", cassette single copies of this song run 4:11.

Out of curiosity, does anyone recall hearing (or playing) the "Power Mix" on Top 40 radio?
