Is the 45 version of "Silent Running" just a later, quick fade in and early fade out of the album version? That's what I seem to remember, but I wasn't sure if there were any edits in the middle.

As a side note, the video on YouTube runs about 5:12, and it retains the cold ending of the LP. Obviously, this was a unique edit for the video only. (Actually, it sounds like a crossfade toward the end.)

No, there is an out of sequence edit, which if I remember correctly, copies the first chorus and puts it before the first verse. I don't remember the other edit details off hand.

Thanks for the details. I have it on a TM disc, but I don't have any faith that it's actually correct. If anyone would be kind enough to send a 45 dub, so that I can check it, that would be great. Too many of their '80s "single versions" are not correct.

I imagine that during the "swoosh" sfx at the 45-rpm's opening, the lead up music (on the LP) would not be present either right (except for the first two sixteenth notes prior to the downbeat)? So could you even edit it down from the LP version?

Actually, it does a quick fade in just before the two sixteenth notes, and you can hear the tail end of the lead up music.

Bumping this back up. Does the 45 dub match the version on TM Century?

For all intents and purposes, yes. It is a homemade edit, though,
because it goes slightly out of sync with the 45 at the edit points.

Sounds to me like an early fade, is their an edit elsewhere?

For what it's worth, the version on The "A" List Disc
35
(1994) runs 4:13 with the outro silence (probably a
second or two less without the silence). It's most likely
a clone of the TM Century version.

Going through my notes, I noted to myself that there are
edits at 0:16 and 0:31. I can't tell if those edits are
present in the original LP version or if they came from
TM's editing, but there they are.

(This is a marginally useful post, at best...)

Thanks, crap. Yes, from reading everything here, I'm convinced the "A" List Discs and TM Century use the same edits.

Just wanted to drop in my two cents for clarification
purposes. The 45 edit of "Silent Running" eliminates the
opening 54 seconds of the LP version and begins with a
quick fade up to the first downbeat of the instrumental
chorus that kicks off the song itself. Then there is an
edit halfway into that instrumental intro chorus
(starting around 1:08 of the LP length) that drops in
the second half of the first sung chorus (about 2:07 to
2:22 of the LP) before returning to the first verse.
Interestingly, this new sung intro section is actually
repeated later in the first official chorus so you'll
hear it twice in the 45 edit.

Hi Guys, Returning to this topic of "Silent Running" by
Mike + the Mechanics, it is worth clarifying the
information:

Versions:

LP: 6:14
US 45: 4:10
UK 45 (#1) - aka single edit: 5:20 (with the intro sung
by Paul Carrack and cold ending)
UK 45 (#2) (?) - aka single edit 2: 5:20 (without the
intro sung by Paul Carrack and cold ending)
Video Version: 4:20 approx. (5:14 full video) (with the
intro sung by Paul Carrack and cold ending, with
crossfade toward the end, unique edit for the
video only)

There are other edited versions for the greatest hits:

- Hits (1996) 6:10 (LP version with intro a few seconds
shorter)
- Favourites: The Very Best Of (2000) 6:10 (LP version
with intro a few seconds shorter)
- Mike + the Mechanics: The Singles 1985-2014 (2014) 5.47
(missing the first :28 of the LP version)
- Genesis: R-Kive (Box Set) (2014) 5:47 (missing the
first :28 of the LP version)
- Mike + The Mechanics – Silent Running - Master Series
Collection (2018) 5:46 (missing the first :29 of the LP
version)

Carrack's Hits:

- Paul Carrack – The Carrack Collection (1993) 6:14 (LP
Version)
- Paul Carrack – Twenty-One Good Reasons: The Paul
Carrack Collection (1994) 4:10 (US 45)
- Paul Carrack – Carrackter Reference (1999) 5:21 UK 45
(#1)
- Paul Carrack - The Story So Far... (2006) 4:13 (US 45)
- Paul Carrack – Collected 4:12 (US 45)

I hope this information is useful, greetings
