Had a question. The lone MONO entry listed in the database is the 45 version. All STEREO entries are the LP version. What's the difference? I've been informed commercial 45 versions were STEREO.

the mono version starting at 2:20 has a harmony flute that is either missing
or mixed way down from the stereo version. I don't know about the 45 that
charted in 1973 in the US being stereo or mono (can anyone check?), but the
song was recorded and released in 1969, which likely accounts for that
mono mix.

On the last instrumental break (starting at about 2:20), the flute solo is entirely different on the 45 vs. the LP. I can't tell if an additional flute line was overdubbed on the 45 version or if it was replaced by an entirely new solo.

My commercial copy of the 1972 chart hit on Chrysalis 2006 is stereo. Deadwax is a machine-stamped M7262S-1C (with the bottom half of the letter "C" hand-etched to bolster the otherwise very light machine-stamped letter.) Listed time is (3:18).

The corresponding Chrysalis 2006 DJ 45 is mono/stereo. Deadwax for the mono DJ is hand-etched CHS-2006 M-7262-DJ 1B. Deadwax for the stereo DJ is hand-etched CHS-2006 M-7262 SDJ 1A. Both sides are listed as (3:18).

My commercial copy of the original 1969 non-charting U.S. 45 on Reprise 0845 is mono. Deadwax is a machine-stamped M-7262-1C. Listed time is (3:22).

That's interesting and makes total sense. Given the :04 time difference between the 1969 and 1972 versions, does anyone know what the differences are? Looks like the database CD probably contains the non-charting 45 version.

Yah Shure:

can you tell us about the differences in the flute solo at 2:20 on your 2 45s?

I have a digital copy of the 1969 version I snagged from Rhapsody a couple weeks back. I would say it's definitely a dedicated mono mix and has a different sound to it.

I was able to listen to a dub of the 1972 Chrysalis commercial 45. Compared it to STEREO/MONO versions from Stand Up and a copy from the parent CD Living In The Past. Sent them to Aaron for comparison as well. His conclusion, and I concur, is that the Chrysalis 1972 45 and the STEREO versions are the same. Only the MONO copy from Stand Up, apparently the non-hit version, is dramatically different, and doesn't match the hit 45 at all.

Sure, David. John is correct; the 1969 Reprise 0845 non-LP single is a dedicated mono mix. Ian Anderson's vocals are mixed a tad wetter on this 45.

Regarding the differences at 2:20: to my ears, this is a mix difference. The Reprise single has both the main and harmony flute parts mixed prominently, and both appear on the first note of the break.

At 2:20 on the 1972 Chrysalis 45, the main flute part is mixed very, very low, but it's there. The harmony flute (in the left channel) doesn't come in until almost 1.3 seconds later. The flutes aren't potted up in the mix for still another 0.4 seconds, and the harmony part never is mixed as prominently as it is on the Reprise single. The upshot is that the violin is left to carry the load from 2:20 to 2:21.7.

There is a speed difference, too. The Reprise single runs slower; its actual time is (3:22). The fade starts later and is not as gradual as it is on the Chrysalis 45. I timed all of the vinyl Chrysalis sides: stereo DJ, mono DJ, commercial 45 and my promo copy of the Living In The Past LP, and each one runs an actual (3:19).

The mono side of the Chrysalis DJ 45 is a fold-down of the 1972 stereo mix, and is not the 1969 mono Reprise version. The stereo Chrysalis DJ 45 is cut hotter than its commercial counterpart. Like John and Aaron, I detect no difference between the 1972 Chrysalis 45 and LP track.

Thanks to Jim for informing me that his commercial 45 copy of Jethro Tull's "Living in the Past" is in stereo and has an actual run time of 3:19 (printed time: 3:18). I only mention this because the song's database CD entries run from 3:16-3:21.

This song appears on a 2007 various artists compilation,
but that entry is currently missing in the online database.
It is track 16 on disc 2 of Time-Life 21786 Flower Power-
Time Of the Season.
