How does the 3:38 version differ from the 4:06 (besides mix)? What accounts for the difference in length - is it an edit or early fade?

I checked the long version on YouTube - Besides mix differences, the promo single is simply an early fade by 30 seconds. And the extra 30 seconds on the long version is just instrumental...
So I prefer the early fade (and remix.)

There is also Lava/Atlantic PRCD-8967. This has two cuts:
1 New Mix (Clearmountain Mix) 4:00 listed; 4:07 actual
2 Original Mix Edit 4:00 listed; 4:06 actual

Does anyone know the difference between these versions,
and are they both different mixes versus the LP version?

I've been wondering that myself. There has to be, otherwise they wouldnt be labeled different mixes, right?

bumping this one back up. I too am curious about the
2nd promo cd PRCD 8967 with the clearmountain mix. Does
anyone have this promo to verify if this a different mix
altogether than the radio version that is on PRCD 8909?
I have that promo cd but want to see if tracking down
the clearmountain mix promo cd is worth my time.

To Rick:
I recently got a chance to listen to the
'new mix - Clearmountain mix'.
To my ears it sounds like the Messenger
album mix faded earlier to approx the same
length as the 'Radio Mix'.
Hope this makes sense.

Thanks Andy. Sometimes these remix versions of rock/pop
songs are so subtle the only way to tell any difference
to play them side by side. Sometimes I hear no
difference at all.

Yeah, Rick, I wish there were truth-in-labeling laws
for
music!
Probably it should have been labeled 'New Fade of
Older
Mix' but that wouldn't have the programming appeal...
What I'm trying to figure out is exactly what mix is
on the first release of the track which was the
'Message In A Bottle' O.S.T.
I'm assuming it was the
same mix and length as Edwin's 'Messenger" album but I
can't confirm as nobody I know has that soundtrack CD
(it didn't
sell well).

I think you might be onto something with the soundtrack info. The Message In A Bottle soundtrack was released January 29, 1999, five months before Edwin McCain's Messenger LP was released. Online, the soundtrack labels the song "Radio Mix LP / Message Mix." Is it possible that the "New Mix" was created for the Edwin McCain full-length CD for its June 15, 1999, release date?
To summarize, here are the contents of the two promo CDs:
PRCD 8908
1. Radio Mix (listed 4:00; actual 4:06)
2. non-described version (listed 4:38; actual 4:37)
PRCD 8967
1. New Mix (Clearmountain Mix) (listed 4:00; actual 4:07)
2. Original Mix Edit (listed 4:00; actual 4:06)
The non-described version, Radio Mix, and Original Mix Edit are all the same mix. The latter two are digitally identical on the promo CDs, while the non-described version is a longer, unedited version. (The edit in the shorter version occurs at 3:54, and it's faded sooner than the full 4:38 version, so it's not merely an early fade as was stated earlier in the thread.)
One way to tell the mixes apart is that there is an additional layer of strings on the intro of the original mix--a constant note held throughout the entire intro.
So, my guess is that the "New Mix" truly was a new mix at the time, which was included on the Messenger album, although I don't have this on CD to verify. On Spotify, all the versions currently available for streaming are the Clearmountain mix but running 4:33. I didn't A/B these to see if it's an early fade, edit, or both. In any case, it's the original mix (Radio Mix, Original Mix Edit, non-described version) that is unique compared to what's available on CD. The Best Of Edwin McCain CD, the compilation Stop Handgun Violence, and presumably the Messenger CD, all have the Clearmountain mix. Pat's database currently has no notation for Message In A Bottle, but does this CD really contain the earlier mix?

Hey Aaron,
Thanks for distinguishing the mixes. So If I
understand, the radio mix and non described version
from PRCD 8908 match the Original mix edit from PRCD
8967. I have PRCD 8908 and those versions are
definitely a bit different then the version on messenger
cd which I have as well. So we are speculating the mix
on messenger and the new mix (clearmountain) on the
promo cd are the same mix (except for an edit or fade on
the promo cd)? hope that made sense.

Yeah, I don't have the Messenger or Message In A Bottle CDs to compare, so I'm having to speculate. Based on the promo CDs, there are two basic mixes:
1. Original 4:37 mix - possibly on Message In A Bottle soundtrack - edited to 4:06 on promo CD singles
2. Clearmountain mix - possibly on Messenger album - presumably edited to 4:07 on promo CD single (PRCD 8967)
