i have the promo cd single for the brian mcknight song "back at one" issued as motown u5p-1595 and contains the below tracks
1-radio version (3:24 listed; 3:21 actual)
2-lp version (4:22 listed; 4:21 actual)
3-call out hook #1 (0:11 listed; 0:11 actual)
4-call out hook #2 (0:11 listed; 0:11 actual)
question is, the billboard charts from the time say that there was a commercial release, as motown 156501 but the only configuration i have been able to locate, which i have, is the 12" which has the "groove brothers club mix" (6:45) as the A-side.....does anyone have a different commercial configuration with that catalog number......also....i see the db states that the promo cd single has the "radio edit" with a run time of 3:42....is that a typo......or are there 2 promo cd singles

There was a 7" released as well on Motown 156402. No timing listed on the label, though.

The commercial single as motown 156501 was only the 12 inch vinyl. I knew the info by a music magazine which was published in Japan in 1999.

Not a typo Ed. Hot Hit Pop #73 has a 3:42 radio edit with a longer instrumental ending rather than the 3:21 fade.
So which is the actual radio edit, the 3:21 or the 3:42?

I'd go more with the 3:21 as the official radio edit. It's what is on most configurations of the single that are listed on Discogs. In fact, I didn't see the 3:42 at all on any configurations there. Plus, it's what I always remember hearing on the radio. I imagine most stations would rather play the shorter edit anyway.
I did notice that there's a Second Promo CD Single with the same tracks and listed running times as the one previously mentioned. It's listed as U5P-1560.

The only 'non-maxi' single format in which this song was commercially released in the US was as a 7-inch single (Motown 012156402-7). I timed it at 3:21. It is simply an early fade (a very quick one after the vocals end) of the 3:42 version.

So if the commercial 45 has the 3:21
edit, can we safely assume it is
officially a "Single Version" rather
than just a Radio Edit? (Especially
considering there was no CD or
Cassette Single released
commercially for it).

I subscribed to Top Hits U.S.A. back then and they have
this labeled as a radio version not an edit.
