In the database, it's noted that mono and stereo mixes of this song are "substantially different." I heard this song on the radio today, and for the first time I might have heard the longer mono mix. Are my ears deceiving me, or is this a different vocal take than the stereo version I have grown accustomed to hearing?

The vocal takes on both the mono 45 and original stereo mixes are the same. However the mixes are quite different from each other. The most noticeable thing on the mono mix is that the bass drops out for four bars during the first verse of the song and comes back in. Combine that with a healthy dose of compression, those are the main differences between the two.

And, the mono single mix is dry. The stereo mix is wet with lots of reverb (echo).

Welcome to the forum, Jeff!

I'll bet that's why I thought the vocals were different...NO REVERB! Thanks for clarifying.

I grew up with and love the original mono mix. I cannot stand to listen to the stereo mix at all. It doesn't sound right.

If you ever hear the vocal tracks of just Diana's voice, you will be shocked to find how much they runed things on the stereo mix!

Yes, welcome, Jeff! I've always enjoyed your posts on the Steve Hoffman website.

Aaron, just how much longer was this mix of "You Can't Hurry Love" that you're referring to? It could have been the longer remix on Supremes #1s, which I believe is dry as well.

Good point, Brian. I asked a friend of mine who used to work at the oldies station that I was listening to, and he said they DO play the version off #1s. So, that would also explain why it sounded different. It probably ran a good seven or eight seconds longer (air time) than I'm used to hearing. I was waiting for the fadeout, and it came much later than I expected.

My commercial 45, confirmed as Motown 1097, has a listed time of (2:49), but an actual time of (2:43). My 45 is vinyl, with machine-stamped deadwax of "TK4M--3659-1-C", followed by a handwritten "HIV-207318". The wide-ranging run times of current database CDs featuring this song are from (2:42) to (2:58).

jim is correct.....my commercial 45 issued as motown 1097
lists a run time of 2:49 but actually runs 2:43....you'll
need to fade out the 'anthology' cd version for 0:06 from
2:37 to 2:43 to effectively re-create the true vinyl 45
version.....

Something new, to me. I was listening to my T/L Superhits 1966. I had to do a few takes on the spot to make sure I was actually hearing a whistle at 00:46.

Thanks to this forum, I am now critically listening to just about everything I happen across.

My new sickness.
