Sometimes the simplest of quest becomes a journey of a million miles...
I was looking the the American 12" of Eddy Grant's Electric Avenue.
This link tells me there was a UK 12" released on Ice, while in the USA a 12" was on Portrait. Both run 6:18 according to their labels; chances are they were the same remix. Great!
So I go digging in YouTube and find a copy of the UK 12" and the US 12". Turns out the US 12" stays identical to the original 7" until 3:20, then vamps for another 3 minutes. The UK 12" actually does a bit more "messing" with the original mix, although it is similar in structure to the original 7".
Fine. So I need a copy of the US 12"... & of course the copy in my file archives is the UK 12". *sigh* OK, so I'll go see what I can find on the web.
First, I find this mp3 of unknown & questionable origin (audio starts playing upon launch) and it is identical to the US 12" EXCEPT it stays with the original 7" for 20 seconds longer THEN picks back up with the US 12".
$#!+
Finally, I discover, by golly, iTunes has a 12" running 6:16 12" running 6:18 for sale! Fantastic! I'll just...
Hey, wait a sec... I can't tell from the sample if this is the US 12", the UK 12", or this bizarre 6 & 1/2 minutes extended version of the US extended version.
Can anybody tell me if the original US 12" was 6:16 or 6:30, and if the extended version for sale on iTunes is the US 12" or UK 12" or the edited US 12"?
Thanks for your help! This search reminds me of a favorite quote:
"Never mistake a clear view for a short distance." :-)

The version in your sample sounds more like some DJ played
around with the real U.S. 12" version with computer editing
program. It sounds cheesy.

My US 12" runs about 6:17, so that's the one you want.

The US version running 6:18 is on the 2-disc deluxe reissue of Killer on the Rampage as well.

Excellent! This gives me the answer I need; sounds like what's on iTunes should match the original US 12". As always, thanks for your help!!
