I have a question that has bothered me since I got the 45 in Nov. '80. Would any Beatles/Lennon audio junkies be able to better isolate the garbled effect on this song starting at 3:27? To me it sounds like a heavily contorted voice, but what it says to my ears (and I heard this pre-Dec. 8th) has always struck me as rather eerie. I won't say what I think it says as to not "lead the witness". If this falls out of the confines of the board, I apologize.

I believe you're referring to the part of the song where the guitars have an eerie "voice like" quality. I'm sure you could do a Google search for more details regarding this. I actually had a radio show on tape regarding this particular portion of the song from many years ago, long lost by now. I still remember it and know EXACTLY what you are referring to.
I could go into more detail, but I don't believe this is the forum for this.

I'd hope that Pat's forum could occasionally extend to
music trivia as well, not just the confines of which
version is one second longer or shorter....
at least i dont think many here would object!
For what it's worth, i always assumed that was Yoko saying
something in the background with a weird echo on it (like
she's in the back of the studio with a bullhorn).
Just gave another listen - still sounds like her to me.
Seems like just the kind of thing they'd do back then.

I always assumed that was supposed to be a P.A. announcement that you would hear at an airport. Certainly fits in with the lyrics of the song ("take a trip somewhere far, far away").

The radio show that discussed this dedicated 3 hours to the subject of "backmasking/subliminal music". According to the show, right at that point in the song, the guitar/voice supposedly sounds like/says something like "Late at night, you will kill....Mark David". Remember, (Just Like) Starting Over was recorded BEFORE John Lennon was murdered on December 8, 1980 & was in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 at that time.
Listen to it carefully, what do you think?
I'll try to dig up that cassette, it's been years since I've heard it.

At this point, it could be anyone. It's too heavily
processed to pinpoint any one person. But, in 1980, the
technology was there for it to have been s keyboard or
guitar.
