my commercial 45 for the dale hawkins song "susie-q" issued
as checker 863 does not state a run time on the label but
actually runs 2:15....the db has a wide range of run times
(2:11-2:18).....this vinyl 45 info. s/b added to the db....

I just stumbled on to some new info about this song. I
just found that the hit 45 version has a lot of echo and reverb added,
but my own several CD rips are bone dry.
I was wondering if anyone has a 45 that is dry like the CD rips.
Our copy of Checker 863 has the echo and the dead wax is 45-8437.
I was also wondering if anyone has a CD that does have the echo and reverb.
These CDs in the database are dry:
(M) (2:17) MCA 5777 Vintage Music Volumes 1 & 2
(M) (2:16) Time-Life 2RNR-01 The Rock 'N' Roll Era -
1957
I'm not sure, but I think the dry master was found in the
vaults by Steve Hoffman when he did the MCA Vintage CDs. And I think that
master ended up on many CDs after that.

My source for this track is Ace "The Golden Age Of American Rock'n'Roll Vol.
7". It has the reverb/echo.

Interesting that when Creedence Clearwater Revival released
their version of the song that it was spelled as Suzie-Q
whereas Dale Hawkins released it as Susie-Q.

David, I discovered that the UK master doesn't quite match the U.S. 45. I too have the
above CD. I didn't mention this in my post because I thought that master was only on the
import - but with the help of Ron Gerber I found that it made its way over here to at
least 2 CDs. Listen close to the intro beats and hand claps. The UK mix does not include
the slap echo of the U.S version and the reverb is different. Since it was on an Ace CD, I
conclude that it was the UK 45 version.
It took some digging on Youtube but I found one video with the UK version:

Mark, I've found not every Ace package is true to the UK
45. My ears think Ace found an early-generation tape and
added reverb. Does anyone out there have a needledrop to
the UK 45 to see if I am right or wrong?
I am amazed at how most of the CD transfers of this
classic cut have a different "sound" from each other!
Any help or direction would be appreciated!
