Ed, the hit version released on Amy features a double-tracked lead vocal. On the alternate take, Joey's lead is single-tracked. The difference is apparent as soon as he begins to sing.

There are some female background singers missing on the last line of the song on cd's I have called alternate versions.

Over at BSN, in the discography they mention that the 1964 "Midnight
Mary" LP on Amy contains a different version from the 45. Would this be
this "alternate take", or is that yet another recording?

Yes, David, that Amy LP that was the origin of the
alternate take.
It's the same backing track, but his single tracked-vocal
is a different one from the double tracked 45. (In other
words, it's not just an underdub) .. and there are female
backing vocals (harmony overdubs) over the entire 45 that
are missing from the alternate.
