Regarding Whitney Houston's "Step by Step", I thought I'd point out that my copy of The Preacher's Wife soundtrack CD (Arista 18951) contains two versions of the song: 1) the 4:10 version listed in the database and 2) a remix running 4:31.
Also, according to my research, the commercial cassette and CD single releases contains the following tracks and printed run times:
1) Album Version - 4:12
2) Teddy Riley Remix - 4:14
Meanwhile, the promo CD single release on Arista ASCD-3307 is shown with the following tracks and listed run times:
1) Special Radio Edit - 4:09
2) Album version - 4:12
The Discogs.com website indicates that the "Special Radio Edit" was remixed by Teddy Riley and therefore may be the same track that's on commercial single copies.
So does anyone have a commercial and/or promo single copy of "Step by Step" who can confirm the actual run times? Also, I don't remember the song getting much airplay in my area, but did hear my local Top 40 station play the single/album version. Does anyone recall hearing (or playing) the Teddy Riley Remix?
By the way, I never realized until now that "Step by Step" was written by Annie Lennox!

2-track commercial CD single in card sleeve:
1. Album Version - actual 4:12
2. Teddy Riley Remix - actual 4:14
So the printed run times are (amazingly) correct.

Thanks, Brian!
Also, for anyone wondering about the remix running 4:04 on Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits CD (Arista 14626), this track is listed as being the "Junior Vasquez Mix". I think it's probably safe to logically conclude that this isn't the same as the "Teddy Riley Remix" (even though I don't presently have the latter to evaluate and compare).

The song was first performed by Annie Lennox. It was the B-side to "Precious". You can also hear Annie on backing vocals on Whitney's cover.

That's interesting, Tom... I wonder if the remix with the reported 4:32 run time on your promo CD single is the same as the remix on The Preacher's Wife soundtrack CD I brought up in my initial post?

Any verification as to whether this is the case?

Here's what I have:
ASCD-3279
1. Remix (listed 4:32; actual 4:14)
2. Album Version (listed & actual 4:12)
The "Remix" on this promo is the "Teddy Riley Remix," which is confirmed in the credits on the back insert.
ASCD-3307
1. Special Radio Edit (listed 4:09; actual 4:11)
2. Album Version (listed & actual 4:12)
The "Special Radio Edit" uses the intro of the "Teddy Riley Remix," but then switches to the "Album Version" once the drums kick in at 0:38. This is also confirmed in the credits on the back insert, which read "Intro remixed by Teddy Riley..."

This does appear to be the case, although the CD single versions fade out to 4:14, while the soundtrack version on YouTube runs 4:32. Apparently the promo CD single would've had the correct time if they had used the full remix from the soundtrack.

I'm just bringing to everyone's attention that it appears that the released commercial versions of this song are not lossless quality. This applies to the special radio edit and album version. I am happy to report that the Vazquez remix appears lossless.
If anyone can check their copies of Ultimate Dance Party 1998 where it is on please let me know if something peaks better. The Preacher's Wife soundtrack is not any better.

Does anyone know which version was actually
predominantly played on
the radio? It seems like there were 3 different track
1's on the various promo cds (Album, Remix, Special
Radio). I don't remember which I heard on the radio.
Thanks for
any info!

Thanks for posting the info above regarding the lossy versions. I was unaware of this, and it was the shock of my life when
I just tested the "Album Version" from my copy of the "Step By Step (The Remixes)" commercial CD single to see that it's
roughly equivalent to a 128k(!) MP3.
However, some good news is that the 4:58 "Teddy Riley Remix" is lossless on this CD. The "Teddy Riley Remix" running 4:14 on
the 2-track CD single (which received some airplay) and the 4:34 "Remix" version on the The Preacher's Wife soundtrack
are simple early fades of this 4:58 version.
