so, do any of the 'big big man' versions match the vinyl 45
version, or are they all the same??.....also...the vinyl 45
actually runs 2:58....it does not have a listed running
time...

Big, Big man is second pressing onward. "Hell Of A Man" was
first pressings only.

Most of the versions out there today have a slow, more distinct delivery of "Big Big Man" ending. My Columbia promo is not as slow and deliberate/expressive. I don't have a commercial copy so I can't say if they're the same, but the promo is definitely different and is the one I remember hearing in '61.

On Youtube, there are three videos claiming to be the vinyl 45. All are the
same “big big man” version, i.e., the 2nd 45, but they are NOT the same as
my stereo version, which is the slower, drawn-out version (from his
“Greatest Hits” CD).

So, seems the 2nd 45 (1st “Big Big Man” version) might be missing on CD?
Pat, are any of the CDs with stereo “Big Big Man” versions listed actually
this 2nd 45 or are they all the different vocal take? The question begs then,
when did this drawn-out "big big man" version first appear? In the CD era
or prior? Perhaps on the 1966 vinyl LP “Greatest Hits”? Any one have that?

To my knowledge, none of the stereo versions of Big Bad John contain the correct 45 version of this song with the "big big man" line. I guess I should indicate "with alternate big big man" line in the database. Where the alternate big big man line originated I do not know.

The "Big, Big, Man" line was re-recorded shortly after the
original 45 was released, some stations were very antsy
about "One Hell Of A Man" being aired. So, Columbia got
Jimmy Dean to re-record the last line shortly after the
original 45 release, in the Owen Bradley Quonset Hut, in
Nashville, TN and like the original, Glenn Snoddy at the
controls. The song became a hit, and later matrices
contained "Big, Big, Man" on the 45 RPM mono single.

You're right, Columbia got him to re-record that "hell-uv-a-man" bit. My
query, still unresolved, is when did the SECOND recording of the "big big man"
lyric first appear?

That's a good question. Columbia apparently wasn't happy
with the first "Big, Big Man" recording, and apparently
Don Law and Frank Jones had it re-recorded again. Wish I
knew someone at Sony Nashville (the old guard I knew are
all retired or died off)

I have heard all these versions though I'm a bit foggy on the second pressing that has the first incantation of Big, Big Man.

In Jimmy Dean's 2004 autobiography he states that shortly after
the original Big Bad John single had been released Columbia
felt that the "one hell of a man" lyric was too "risqué." So they
had Dean re-record the substitute "big big man" line in New York
City.

However in his book Dean did not explain why there are two
different readings of the big big man line - apparently one
for the mono 45 and a different one for the stereo album
version.

According to posts on the 45cat site the original single release
with the "one hell of a man lyric" had the title Big John.
When the line was amended to "big big man" so too the title
changed to Big Bad John.

I do not have the original vinyl "Big Bad John..." LP but every
STEREO version of "Big Bad John" I've every heard had the
drawn out "big big man" delivery.

In the CD era the "one hell of a man" and faster "big, big-man"
lyrics from the 45's have been edited into the original STEREO
version.

For the record, courtesy of the 45Prof here's a clean vinyl
transfer of the 1961 mono single with the revised big big man
lyric

Glad you posted those links, CountryPD. This song has confused me as to
the two different "big BIG man" versions vis-a-vis when each was first
issued.

I'll label them the "long drawn out/slower" version vs. the "big BIG
man/faster" version, following your identifying them.

It's understood that initial copies of the 45 contained the "one hell of a
man" lyric. What I didn't know until I went to 45cat, was that they were
titled "Big John". Due to the "offensive" line, Dean re-recorded it as "big
BIG man" - the "big BIG man/faster" version - and most copies thereafter
were titled "Big Bad John".

From that YouTube post of the original LP, seems it has the 2nd re-recorded
line, the "long drawn out/slower" version, it appearing on both the mono
and stereo issue of the "Big Bad John And Other Fabulous Songs And
Tales" LP. It's THIS (stereo) version that has become the common version -
it was also issued on 1966 LP "Jimmy Dean's Greatest Hits", and it
permeated from there.

I just wonder if any of the LPs (the mono ones) contained that 2nd 45 "big
BIG man/faster" version!

Found this on YouTube. Discogs lists this as a 1963
release. Columbia various artists compilation Great Country
And Western Hits Vol. 4 CL 2081 This MONO LP has the
"faster" version.

Also - I played the Big Bad John
Columbia Hall Of
Fame 45 on the radio back in the 70's. Seems to me that
MONO 45 had the slower/drawn out big big man version. I do
not have a copy of that release. Perhaps someone could verify
that or prove me wrong. Unfortunately there's no post of that 45
on YouTube.

Tom- this sounds to me like a slightly sped up copy of the first "big
BIG man/faster version" lyric that was issued to replace the original
"one hell of a man" release.

artist CD's:

Country USA 1961 - Time/Life CTD-01 [1988]

Billboard Top Country Hits 1961 - Rhino R2 70682 [1990]

That version MAY have also been reissued elsewhere but I am
not aware of it.

The 2nd 45 MONO release with the "big BIG man/faster
version" has not been issued on CD to my knowledge. But as
Santi indicated in an earlier post Hit Parade has created a
STEREO version by editing that first rendition of the line into the
album version. You could fold that down to MONO to get a close
approximation of that release.
