my commercial 45 for the five keys song issued as capitol
2945 has, at the beginning, the breath right before they
start singing.....the cdr version i have from, i believe
the 'doo wop' box set does NOT contain the
breath.....question is, do any of the cd's contain the
breath before the song starts, like the 45 does?

Ed, I have "Ling Ting Tong" on the various artists Capitol Collectors Series promo sampler (DPRO-79346), which includes a "1-2-3-(pause)" countoff on the track. There's a light tap on that pause - or what would be the fourth beat of the countoff - which makes it sound sort of like a breath when the "1-2-3" portion of the countoff that precedes it is trimmed off.
I don't have the 45, but will send you a dub so you can edit it accordingly.

john, (yah shure) was kind enough to forward me a copy of
his cd version with the count-off.....if you edit the first
:02.10 seconds and capture the breath before the songs
starts, you can effectively re-create the true vinyl 45
version...thanks john for your help on this one!!!

makes me wonder, when CDs are mastered, do engineers hear such a breath
and think "why is that there" then trim it off, then years later, we 45 purists
learn that the 45 had it, so we want it! I LOVE it! lol

Funny you should mention that, David. I had an idea after getting Ed's response last night: a 99-track compilation CD, titled Every Breath You Take, comprised of nothing but the opening breaths from all the singles which had left them intact.
Imagine how many clearance hoops there would be to jump through. Then there's the matter of finding the best tape sources, having to decide to go with mono or stereo...
Still, the inital reactions from all those licensing people would be so worth it:
"You want to... what?"

My nomination for best opening breath on a top-40 hit is on the single/radio version of "High Enough" by Damn Yankees (Jack Blades?)
The album version doesn't have the breath; it has a musical intro instead.

"High Enough" is a good pick! Hadn't gotten that 45 off the shelf since probably 1992 or so.
My nomination fell short of the pop top 40 (#69) but did manage a #35 AC showing in 1980: Karla Bonoff's "Baby Don't Go."
Speaking of that "getting stupid" notion: while on one of those typical daisy-chain YouTube journeys a few hours ago, I came across a posting of an Every Brothers song that the poster listed as the original version of "The Air That I Breath." (sic):

I have "High Enough" from Damn Yankees (the 45 version) on
a Monster Ballads CD and it's missing the opening breath.
Good news, though, I came across a copy of the 45 version
that HAS the opening breath on a T-L Box Set. For Jack
Blades' sake, good thing we found his missing breath.

It's possible any of the database entries running 4:16 for
"High Enough" may also have the opening breath.
