the db lists the only version as the 1:18 album version,
but i believe the single version runs 3:46 or 3:39 and is a
remix of some kind with chris brown....does anyone have any
additional info that they could share.......i found both a
a 3:46 and 3:39 remix version that is dirty on-line....but
amazon doesn't have this remix version available on their
site.......the db will need to be amended...

From another Rihanna thread:

Paul C wrote:
The only version of "Birthday Cake" that has been commercially released (either physically or digitally) is the 1:18 version on the Talk That Talk album. This is not the hit version. (Chris Brown does not appear on it.)

Earlier this year, her label started to promote to radio stations and clubs the much longer "Remix" featuring Chris Brown to which Aaron refers. Because of the history between the two artists, however, there was a considerable negative reaction to it. As a result, Rihanna's label decided not to commercially release it in any form. Many radio stations, however, did play it. I doubt that more than a handful of stations, if any, played the original 1:18 version.

For the first few weeks of its chart run, the Hot 100 showed the artist as "Rihanna". Starting with the chart of April 7, however, the artist credit was shown as "Rihanna Featuring Chris Brown". If you look on iTunes, you'll see a lot of angry comments from people who mistakenly purchased the 1:18 version, believing they were actually purchasing the version with Chris Brown they were hearing on the radio (which is almost three times as long).

So what we have here is the unusual situation of a hit song of which only a 1:18 snippet has ever been commercially released.

The odd thing is that Rihanna's new album, released five days ago, does contain another track featuring Chris Brown.

aaron & paul c, thanks for the info.........so if the song
was released to radio then there must have been a clean
version of the song issued somehow, somewhere.......like i
said i was able to find both a 3:39 and 3:46 running
version of the song, which are dirty/unedited....the only
difference i can tell is the pitch....wikipedia (for what
it's worth) shows the remix running time as 3:39......if it
was released to radio for on-air play, in what form would
it be released to radio in?......cd, cdr, digital file?

Ed, it appears that the best source radio was serviced with is a 256kbps mp3, which is clean. TM Studios issued it on one of their radio compilation CDs, and it's the same mp3 source on the CD. It runs 3:39, and I sent it to you for review.

After further investigation promo only also released the 3:39 remix.

Anyone know if "dirty" versions exist on both remixes?

To my knowledge after reviewing the 2012 Top 40, the remix is only available in a clean version timing in at 3:41 on PrimeCuts, which I think is the hit version. It is also not available in lossless quality, as it is an mp3 source. I am not aware of Promo Only having any better quality. The song is not on 7digital and not in Itunes other than the 1:18 time on the LP which does not include Chris Brown.

Paul,

You might want to make an edit in the annual concerning time being (3:39) not listed time of (3:46) and that it is a remix. I assume the R was because it was a repeat (but not sure when this remix charted before) but that seems highly unlikely since it was released in 2012.

Even the discogs listing for the single supports the time:

I just re-timed our hard copy of the "Birthday Cake"
remix and it's exactly (3:46).

BTW, the [R] symbol stands for a few different things and
remix of a previous hit is one of them (the original
album version "Bubbled Under" in 2011).

Paul,

What is the source of the download of the file? Was it clean or is it explicit? I've checked Itunes, 7digital, Qobuz and Tidal Store.

The 3:46 on youtube is uncensored. The 3:39 from TM is censored....

I downloaded it from iTunes at the time (I think it's
since been removed). It is the uncensored version.
