Are Hooked on Classics and Hooked on Swing 45 versions on CD
anywhere? Can they be created from edits?

The 45 of Hooked On Classics is a simple edit of the LP version. The edit occurs at approximately the 1:40 mark at the end of the Karelia Suite segment. Delete from the beginning of the "handclap" part of the beat that begins the Beethoven's 5th Symphony to the handclap that begins the Marriage of Figaro segment.

The 45 of Hooked On Swing cannot be recreated from the LP because the 45 is either a different performance or a drastic remix (the most noticeable difference is the synthesized "thud-clap" beat). However, the 45 version does appear on a long out-of-print RCA from 1991 called "Keep On Dancing". This comp also contains a very nice sounding mastering of the 45 version of the original Stars On 45 medley, as well as the only CD issue of the 45 version of the Stars On 45 III (Stevie Wonder) medley. Unfortunately, Stars On 45 III sounds terrible on this disc, and the 45 version cannot be recreated from the LP due to a unique segue between Superstition and Fingertips.

"Hooked On Classics" is a track I'd LONG forgotten about...

With the above referenced edit, does the 45 version run 3:20? Or, do I have the edit in the wrong place...

Can the 45 version be created by using the version found on the Nippers Greatest Hits of the 80's?
I'm sure there are simple edit points on the one.

Its seems so bizarre to me in hindsight that these records were hits.
I thought they were cool because of the editing and how they were different than anything else on the radio.

Come to think of it the musical years 1980 through 1982 were a bit different too.

Yes, the Nipper version is the LP version and can be transformed into the 45 version by deleting the section from 1:40 (starting with the "handclap") through 2:54 (picking up with the handclap).

The edited version runs 3:50 using the instructions on the post above.

Many beat me to it - yes, when you're done the edit should be at 1:40, and the total run length (including outro silence) should be 3:52 - consistent with what everyone else posted.

Oh, yes they were! The 1981-1982 medley craze sounded ridiculous on the air back then, too. Stars on 45, "Hooked On Classics", "The Beatles Movie Medley", "The Beach Boys Medley", "The Elvis Medley" (not a top 40 hit), "Pistols On 45" by the Black Arabs, British medleys from Gidea Park, and dozens of others that didn't even come close to charting. Squeeze and Captain Sensible released jokey medleys of their own songs on B-sides of their singles, there were parodies (Chas & Dave's "Stars Over 45", Weird Al's "Polkas On 45" and "Hooked On Polkas"), and when the technology was ripe, there was a resurgence (M/A/R/R/S, Jive Bunny...)

Personally, I think it's one of the most laughable crazes to invade the top of the pop charts, ever. (And that includes the Macarena, the Lambada, and Whoomp There It Is!)

Lucky for me, I play loads of bad music on the radio show, and the "God-Awful Medley Of The Week" is a regular feature. Here's a list of all the awfuls medleys I've dredged up and played in the past few years (and there are many more than I haven't gotten to yet):

Holy cow, I never knew there were so many medleys. A few more that I didn't see on your list that you may want to hunt down if you're airing bad medleys:

Enigma - "I Love Music" and "Ain't No Stoppin" (2 different medleys): These medleys (circa 1982-ish) of then-recent disco hits didn't chart in the US but were popular in the UK, and were fairly well-done.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - "Hooked On Tchaikovsky": Follow-up to the "Hooked On Classics" single that failed to chart.

Stars On 45 - "Stars On Frankie": Godawful Sinatra medley that was done a few years after the Stars on 45 crazed had died.

Starsisters/Stars On 45 - "Swing Sisters Medley": Very well-done medley of Andrews Sisters hits by yet another incarnation of Stars on 45.

Regal Funkharmonic Orchestra - "Strung Out On Motown": Motown's attempt to cash-in on the Stars on 45 craze a little late, and too brief song snippets and undistinguished vocals.

Dr. Demento used to play one called "Commercials on 45" by Stevens & Gridnick. I don't know if it was ever released to the public. It's not on the one album I have by them.

While I don't know the full back story to the song, it was released much earlier than 1996, although '96 was the year it became a hit in the US. There's a Wikipedia article that says it was a #1 hit in Australia in 1991. I do not know how accurate the info is though.

A few conversational medley comments.....

I recall there was a stepping point in the medley craze, in 1979. The Supremes Medley that Disconet created was so popular in clubs that Motown had to release it. That same year, a White label DJ medley of oldies strung together over a generic beat was called "Bits & Pieces II"...that used the real 45's of the oldies. Then in '81 Stars On 45 recreated that medley as a production and obviously had the huge pop hit with it. If you ever wondered why the odd line-up of songs in that, the Stars On 45 recreated pretty much as the original medley was done. Even all the Beatles ones were together like that.

So that opened the floodgate.
Then the above mentioned hits were out, "Hooked On Classics" and "The Beach Boys Medley" were all over the radio. Both were well produced, but after that i was buying a lot of them that were real lazy, just random segments spliced together with no thought of "flow"...comes to mind a UK EMI 45 i bought and didn't see in the list up there; "Hollie-Pops" and the flipside "Hollie-Daze"...medley of the Hollies hits.
Another was a Dion/Belmonts medley, same thing, random snippets chopped together in the most jarring fashion.

One other mention as an aside; there is a reason most of even the big hit medleys are absent from CD's. The licensing requirements for them have changed for the more greedy (as we come to expect from our mega-corps).
I don't know every detail, but I believe you now have to pay the licensing fee for each song separately, thus making the cost prohibitive. Also a paperwork nightmare.
It gets worse if it's a foreign owned copyright too, can potentially complicate the process. Plus, whomever holds the mechanical licensing for the recording also wants to be paid (e.g. Stars On 45).
I had to ask about all of that because I spoke to a rep from a oldies label that attempted to license the Stars On 45, and said "forget it."
And sometimes a label can sneak something using a loophole, but those discs usually get pulled pretty quick.
I have the above mentioned "Keep On Dancing" dancing CD (which contains several hard to find ones!) and learned through Pat that is a record club issue. So that one slid by the radar a little.
Of course, all the above problems needn't apply on material that's in the public domain, such as classical music, and the track that started this thread. :-)

Yes, there were many records hastily thrown together to cash in on the medley craze. One of the better ones was the "Seasons Of Gold" Four Seasons medley by Gidea Park. The Frankie Valli imitator was dead-on, and the record was well-produced (in the same league as Stars on 45). This one actually hit the Hot 100. They also did a Beach Boys medley that was pretty good, though not as accurate as "Seasons of Gold".

The Beach Boys Medley (the one by The Beach Boys) was probably the best of the medley records created from original hits. Someone put a lot of work into this one, creating segues that were mostly seamless.

That sure was a long list of medleys. One that I have that wasn't on the list is an import 45 of Bill Haley and His Comets. It doesn't contain any "extra beats" so some of the song changes are slightly jarring.

I tried to make the 45 version from the LP "Hooked On Swing" (US RCA Victor issue.) But I couldn't make it. Because there is not the sound at 0:26 or 0:37 on the LP. This is the mark at 0:24 on the commercial 45.

As the run time info:
"Hooked On Swing"
The commercial 45 actual running time is (3:42), the listed time is "3:40" on the record label. (RCA PB-13219)
The LP actual running time is (6:32), the listed time is "6:34" on the LP record label. (RCA AFL1-4343)

"Hooked On Classics"
The commercial 45 actual running time is (3:50), the listed time is "3:48" on the record label. (RCA PB-12304)

abagon's run time info for the larry elgart song "hooked on swing" was never entered into the db....thanks for the edit you did awhile ago for me aaron, it matches perfectly!
