Hi folks,

A customer sent me a question about an old radio show,
and I can't answer it but I figured what better place to
ask this question with all the radio pros here!

He asks:

"Back in the '70's I recall a syndicated radio show which
I believe was entitled "The Golden Years" and highlighted
the late '50's and 60's R&R era in music and associated
news events of the time period and was broadcast in a
year-by-year format. I believe it was broadcast over a
long holiday weekend.   Do you have any info on the
actual name of the program and whether it is available
anywhere in any format?    My web searches have produced
no results."

Thanks in advance for any info,
Mark M

They have some of those shows posted on ReelRadio.com A great website with old radio airchecks. It costs a couple bucks to join, but well worth it!

Mark,
I am not a former radio pro, and I was only a teen at
the time, but I do remember a radio program series
which sounds similar to the one you are asking about.
It was a 27-part program (one hour for each part)
called "The Top 10 Hits of All Time". It came out in
1981 and aired in my local market over a five-week
period starting with the show for 1955 and continuing
each weekday until they reached 1980. I don't know
how many markets picked it up, but it was a great
series. It counted down the Billboard Top 10 singles
for 1955 - 1980, and as a finale it counted down the
Top 10 singles for the first 26 years of the "Rock
Era". The usual suspects were at the top: "The
Twist" was #1, "Hey Jude" was #2, "Mack the Knife" was
#3, etc. I would love to hear these again, but
unfortunately, my cassette copies wore out decades
ago. Is this the show you are thinking of? Probably
not, but it sounds similar to what you are asking
about. It did have a "Newsmakers" portion after the
first couple of songs which mentioned key historical
facts of each year. The show was hosted by Kris Erik
Stevens.

This was produced by Drake-Chenault. It was supplied to affiliates in 10" reel format. I don't know where one might obtain these other than from a station or employee that had them and kept the reels.
