i little off the database for a moment
does anyone know which cd, if any, contains the 45 version of "back in the saddle" by aerosmith.......the greatest hits cd has a version which is slightly different than the 45 version.......the first vocals on the 45 is at the 0:14 mark while the first vocals on the greatest hits cd is 0:38.......the 45 states the run time as 4:36 and i see there are a few other cd's which contain the song.........i'm hoping there is a aerosmith freak, like i'm a top 40 freak, that maybe could shed some light on this one........thx....edtop40

Ed, although not in the database, this song did peak at #38 Billboard in 5/77. I currently only own a promo 45 for this song. Both the mono and stereo sides for it have both a listed & actual time of (3:37). My new Whitburn Pop Annual states a running time of (4:36), however. Could someone owning a commercial 45 possibly help confirm these details?

jim...my commercial 45 issued as columbia 10516 states on the label a run time of 4:36 but it actually runs 4:22...it is NOT the same version as what is on the greatest hits cd.....the run out groove says..."zss - 162948 - 1b".....does anyone else have the commercial 45 with DIFFERENT run out groove notes....

I just reviewed the 45 version vs. the Greatest Hits CD version, and the longer LP version cannot be edited to make the 45 version. Not only is the 45 edited, but it's a different mix.
The first and easiest way to tell the difference is that there's a different horse "whinney" sound effect on the intro of each one. Also, there's a second horse sound effect on the LP version intro, whereas the 45 version is missing this second sound effect. There are other mix differences throughout the song, too.

Is the promo 45 an edit of the stock 45? Would one presume the promo and stock 45 are the same mix?

I would presume, yes; however, I haven't yet heard the promo 45 version to compare. I'll let you know when I have more details.

Unfortunately, I can't do a timing at this point, (stylus broke this a.m.), but a promo I ordered arrived this morning with a listed time of 4:36 on both sides. Was hoping it would have been the same as Jim's 3:37 promo. Matrix number is: ZSS 162948.
Obviously, there were 2 different promos issued for this song.

Santa works fast! New stylus arrived this morning, so I was able to dub the promo I got. Definitely different than the Greatest Hits version I have. Label says from the LP Rocks. Listed is 4:36, actual is 4:22. My guess...this is the same as the stock version. If anyone is able to come up with edit points to make this 4:22 promo version 3:37, let us know...
BTW, The version currently available digitally from Rocks is the same as the Greatest Hits version.

After gift exchanging, came home to once again dub the promo 45. It is V-E-R-Y narrow stereo. Not sure if the stock 45 is as narrow as this one is.

After getting a unexpected and nice opportunity to hear the 3:37 short promo version, it ALSO is very narrow stereo.
To get the 4:22 version down to 3:37:
Keep 0:00.00-3:10.741
Cut 3:10.741-3:26.000
Keep 3:26.000-3:41.286
Cut 3:41.286-4:11.785
Keep 4:11.785-4:22.000 or so.
The resulting edit will run 3:37.
