I've read through all of the helpful threads detailing mono vs. stereo 45s
between 1968 and 1975, but I couldn't find a thread discussing or listing
mono 45s released after 1975, at least not all in one place.
These are the only ones I know about, but I imagine there may have been a
few more in the late 1970s:
Rock This Town- Stray Cats
I Don't Know Anybody Else- Black Box
I Melt With You- Modern English (I know it's not a Top 40 hit)
Do You Love Me- Contours
Are there others?
For instance, were the 1980s 45 re-releases of "Stand by Me" by Ben E.
King and "Twist & Shout" by the Beatles stereo or mono on the 45s? I never
owned either.

I think there was a pretty good thread on this years ago. I'll try to find it and bump it up.
EDIT - I found the previous thread and bumped it up. You'll need to scroll thru it to dig out some pretty good info.

Thanks for bumping the other thread. There was some helpful
information in there.
Can anyone confirm whether the "oldies" that were reissued and hit the
top 40 in the 1980s were stereo or mono on the 45? I know that Do
You Love Me was a reissue of the Motown Yesteryear release, so I
assume that was mono, but does anyone know about Stand by Me and
Twist & Shout? Did the 45s contain the mono or stereo versions of
those songs when they were released in the 1980s?

The 80's charted pressings of both "Stand By Me" and
"Twist And Shout" were mono.
But when i heard them on the radio at that time I was
hearing mostly the stereo versions. I assumed that was
because a lot of stations already had the stereo in some
form.

Mark, my stock Capitol B-5624 "Twist And Shout" both states and plays stereo.
However, the later Capitol S7-17699 "For Jukeboxes Only!" reissue on pink vinyl was, indeed, mono.

Agreed, on both pressings. The 1986
capitol 45 was stereo, the 1994 pink vinyl
45 was mono. I own both. Stand By Me
stated stereo but played on. In the UK,
however, they got that reissue in stereo.

Not a vinyl 45 per se, but wasn't the Blackout Allstars'
"I Like It" in mono for single edits?

Other than '80s hits that were re-releases of '60s hits (usually when '80s movies came out that used them), are these the last 2 mono top 40 hits (in terms of single versions):
Rock This Town- Stray Cats
I Don't Know Anybody Else- Black Box
Were there any other 1976-1979 singles that haven't been listed here?

Thanks for the correction guys. Coulda sworn my copy of
Twist And Shout was mono.
As for Stand By Me, I remember now I didn't buy the 45
because I was given promo copy of the movie soundtrack.
Does anyone know if it was mono on the LP?

"The Beach Boys Medley" from 1981 was mono - the label even states mono. And it wasn't a Top 40 hit, but Keith Richards' cover of "Run Rudolph Run" from 1978 is mixed mono even though the label states stereo.

I was just thinking about how Halloween almost never falls on a
weekend and it reminded me that, according to the database, every cd
appearance of "Mind Playing Tricks On Me" by Geto Boys is in mono. I
assume the original cd and cassette single versions were also mono?
If so, we can add that one to the list.

Wham's "The Edge Of Heaven" was essentially mono. The guitar solo had a minuscule amount of panning, but everything else in the song was dead center.

Strange that a single released as late as 1986 would be virtually mono. Much of Wham's material from that era had a '60s feel to it, so maybe that was the reasoning behind making this mono. Was the album version near-mono, too?

If I remember right, the album version was the same as the 45, except for the very tail of the fade, where the 45 extended longer than the album version. Both had the same mix, which was essentially mono.
I don't have the credits handy, but I think this is one of the songs that George Michael played drums on. (Real live drums, not a machine.) It could be that they chose to not call attention to the drumming, and buried the drums in the mono mix. That's pure speculation on my part, based on how prominent the drums are in "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and "Careless Whisper".

"Hey Mr. DJ" by Zhane was mono in 1993. At least the LP and 45 versions.
Were the dj promo versions also in mono?

No, the differences in the album version were at the
beginning, not the end. The album version started out
with a portion of the beginning the extended 12-inch mix,
then it switched over to the single version, with
"you bet" from the intro overlapping the first note of
the single
version.
The 12-inch version also cut out the "why waste time with
other guys part" in favor of a ridiculous spoken part
with George Michael's pitched down (and pitched up) voice
having a conversation about getting into a "magic car."
It's stupid.
The album version, as I recall, switches over to the
single version once the main part of the song kicks in.
However, the single version on "The Final" is not mono...
it's just very narrow stereo.

The U.S. Radio Edit of the Ting Ting's That's Not My Name is mono. It can not be recreated from the LP which is in stereo.

I could be wrong but didn't Exile's Kiss You All Over have a mono radio edit?

"Get down on it" popped up on Kool and the Gang's 12"
Collection and More compilation in mono. It was put out on
Mercury's Funk Essential series in 1999.

"I Melt With You" is not mono. It does have a little bit of stereo separation, especially during the bridge where they sing "the future's open wide". Eric Records' "Hard to Find 45s on CD, Vol. 16" has a wider stereo version of it, and the later re-recordings and remixes of it are full stereo as well.
Wham!'s "Freedom" (not to be confused with George Michael's "Freedom '90") is also nearly mono, but has a bit of stereo separation on the drums. Same thing with Billy Joel's "My Life" -- it's almost mono except for the drums and a little bit of reverb.
The version of Fatboy Slim's "Praise You" (not in the database, but it was a Top 40 hit in 1999) that is on the U.S. "NOW 2" CD is 3:24, is purely mono, and starts with a vinyl crackling effect. It's the same way on the Top Hits USA T466 radio CD. But if you look it up online now, the "Radio Edit" of it you can find is 3:47, in stereo, and lacks the vinyl surface noise during the intro. Maybe that was the UK radio edit, but it's not what I recall hearing on U.S. radio.
