The listed stock 45 time of (3:09) is correct. Don't have the original LP handy - assuming all the 3:20-something CD run times are "LP length"?

I think there's also a speed issue here. I just listened to a mono 45 dub (Dunhill 4026) that runs :03 faster than the LP version. That 45 dub actually runs 3:11.

Perhaps 2 different pressings?

Are the hit 45 mixes of the Mamas and Papas songs available on mono Dunhill LPs? Or were there differences between the mono LP and mono 45 versions in most cases?

The reason I ask is because I'm wondering if I would have better sound quality transferring them from a mono LP.

I can't speak for all tracks but some songs had a separate Mono LP mix. Creeque Alley and Words of Love are good examples. They have mono LP mixes but the 45s had instrumentation added. Monday Monday and California Dreamin' MIGHT be the 45 rpm mix but I don't know for sure.

Thanks, Bill. The info is great, although it wasn't exactly the answer I was hoping for :)

The following singles sound the same to me between the mono LP and 45 versions:
- Monday Monday
- California Dreamin'
- I Saw Her Again
- Dedicated To The One I Love

Don't expect any sonic revelations from the mono LPs, though. They sound pretty muddy & murky, owing to the way they were engineered with lots of bounced tracks. However, the LPs have an advantage in that your chances are better of getting these tracks with less vinyl distortion & surface noise from the LPs than the 45s.

I suspect some life could be breathed into these mono tracks with careful mastering if some decent copy tapes could be found somewhere.

My mother never understood why i kept both mono and stereo copies of the Mamas and Papas lp with Dedicated To The One I Love, even when i explained the differences between the two versions....oh well.

I'm guessing most people don't care. Obviously stereo is better, right? :-/

How often do you hear the original single mixes and/or radio edits on oldies stations? Not very. And only we record collectors notice or care.

Don't get me wrong, I like stereo as much as anyone. I was just mentioning how disappointed I was to buy the album and discover the songs were different mixes than I was used to, especially when I paid the extra $1 to get the songs in stereo.
