Many remember this as their follow-up to "Love Will Keep
Us Together." However, this was first released in late
1973 on the Joyce label and received some minor airplay
in later 1974. Does anyone know whether the Joyce
version differs from the hit version eventually released
by A&M?

IIRC, it's the exact same recording.

It must be the same recording, because when you listen
to the CD of their "Love Will Keep Us Together" album,
the difference in sound quality between those two
single sides ("Way I Want to Touch You" and its flip
"Disney Girls") is quite obvious through headphones.
Those two tracks have more background hiss and a
softer sound than the rest of the album.

So almost certainly the same recording, but is it the
same mix? I have no idea. I have either a Butterscotch
Castle or a Joyce label pressing (it was on both), but
I've never listened to it.

Somebody put a crackly Joyce 45 on YouTube, and it's
certainly the same recording, but unfortunately he set
it to mono (you can tell, because the record crackles
are mono, too).

Based on that link that Brian posted, I hear no differences at all.

Sounds the same to me as well. But, I must admit I do
not have the same ear for differences as so many
people on this board do! :-)

Thanks for posting the link. It's always interesting
when a song like this gets a second chance and
succeeds after faltering the first time. R&R did
report some AC stations playing this in 1974, but not
enough for the song to chart. Obviously, the success
of "Love Will Keep Us Together" and the promotional
muscle of a bigger label finally got this song heard.
It doesn't always work - Atlantic re-released Bette
Midler's "Under The Boardwalk" after "Wind Beneath My
Wings" flew up (pun intended!) the charts. But,
"...Boardwalk" did not chart when it was first
released before "Wind..." or after.

It's my favorite C&T song and I've heard it at least hundreds (thousands?) of times.

Again, sounds exactly the same to me!

Wasn't it Toni's sister(s) that did a lot of the backing vocals for them?

Out of all the songs they did this one seems the most interesting to me as well. I really, REALLY like the wavering "Way" in the background as the song comes to a close.

And for some reason after hearing it on that scratchy 45, I am drawn to the conclusion that it could have worked just as well for Carly Simon. I do agree strongly with Paul that they sound the same to me too.

AdvprosD, yes, Toni's sisters Melissa, Jane, and Louisa
are credited as background singers on five of the songs on
their first LP.

The LP/CD liner notes also credit Morgan Cavett as the
producer of "The Way I Want to Touch You" and "Disney
Girls", which suggests that these are the original single
versions recorded for the Joyce 45.

"Love Will Keep Us Together" was the first LP I ever
owned. :). It has a special place in my heart.

Didn't the Spanish version have the backgrounds by the Tennille sisters in English?

Yes. I also think it's possible the instrumental bed was
re-recorded, but it's hard to tell. It's definitely
mixed very differently.
