Does anyone know the name of the Record Research book for Bubbling under the Billboard Hot 100? I have the other Bubbling Under books (Cashbox, Record World), but never bought this one unfortunately. If I can know the title, I can at least try to find it - though it's probably very expensive, being long out of print.

Paul H - any chance this is one of those books like your Disco/Dance book that you still keep in print, by printing about 5 books at a time? I'd sure like to buy this Bubbling Under book!

The last edition I know of was simply called "Bubbling Under The Billboard Hot 100 1959-2004". I think every edition of "Top Pop Singles" since that time has included the Bubbling Under songs.

Dan is correct. All the Billboard Bubbling Under data has been incorporated into both the Top Pop Singles and Pop Annual
books.

BTW, the Bubbling Under album data was also incorporated into the Top Pop Albums book.

I've been looking at the Bubbling Under sections in the Billboard Annual book. It seems there were no bubbling under charts for the years 1986-1991 at all. Is that correct?

And was the Bubbling Under chart strictly 10 positions for the years of 1974 through 1985?

Billboard stopped the chart in August 1985 and began it again in
November 1992. From about 1974 to 1985 it was a Top 10 (I say about
as the size fluctuated up to that point). From its return to today it is a
Top 25.

An interesting little sidebar story...

One of the first books I worked on at Record Research in 1992 was the Bubbling Under book. We released it in the
summer of 1992 and it sold very well. Lo and behold, starting with the issue dated December 5, 1992, Billboard
resurrected the chart! Coincidence?!?

I have that book Paul, and the sequel with the EP and Album Bubbling
in. An excellent book, and I really like the section at the end of the
1992 edition of the history of those that Bubbled that went on to make
the main chart.

I always loved Record World's 101-150 chart which I
understand was published until magazine was stopped
being published in 1982. Is there a list of songs which
made this chart only, available anywhere?

https://www.recordresearch.com/books/101-150-hit-records-195 9-1982/

Currently out of stock, but it does not actually list which did not make the
chart. I'm not sure if RR would do a re-print (Seems unlikely to be honest). If
they ever re-did it I'm sure that would be something worth adding in.

Part of me wishes I'd bought this when it was in stock but then I wish I had
more money to lavish on Record Research....

Hi folks, I'm a new forum member, thanks for having me!

I've recently been working on playlists with songs from 80s
Billboard Hot 100 and Bubbling Under charts.

I'm curious - does anyone know why the Bubbling Under chart
was discontinued from mid 1985 until 1992? And is there an
analogous chart from another publication during this time?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, welcome to the forum!

I've never seen an explanation for why Billboard discontinued the Bubbling Under chart in 1985. I do know
that shortly after Record Research released an updated Bubbling Under book in 1992, Billboard decided to
resurrect the chart.

Dave -

the only thing analogous to the Bubbling Under that I can
think of from the time period comes from Radio & Records.
They published 2 additional lists with their CHR top 40 -
New & Active and Significant action - basically any song
that had 10 or more stations reporting a song (the former
being songs that had more stations than the latter). Many
songs (especially as CHR splintered) that appeared in the
significant action portion did not make the Hot 100.
Worldradiohistory.com is one place to access R&R.

As an example: The 2/28/86 issue of R&R had 25 songs in the
significant action list, 3 of which didn't make the Hot 100
Bon Jovi's "Silent Night", Van Stephenson's "We're Doing
Alright" and Brian Setzer's "The Knife Feels Like Justice"

It's possible that these would have appeared on a Bubbling
Under chart if one was published that week

Well, Cash Box had a "looking ahead" chart, for up to positions 101-150, from 1959-82, and 1990-93. Record Research (RR) compiled these records in their book "Cash Box Looking Ahead 1959-93" = the usual records-by-artist book, not the charts themselves.

Go here to read all about it:

https://www.recordresearch.com/books/cash-box-looking-ahead- 1959-1993/

All the Cash Box bubblers 1954-82 are in the RR "Comparison Book 1954-82" as well. (There's also a RR Record World bubblers book "Hit Records #101-150 1959-82", this data also in the Comparison Book.)

It would be super groovy keen kool to get a RR 'charts themselves' book on all these #101-150 bubbler charts, Billboard, Cash Box, and Record World. Maybe put them all in one book, hint hint, ha...

That would make a great book!

But if I understand correctly, all the bubbling info can be found in Record
Research books of the magazine in question (Cashbox, Record World,
Billboard, etc.) I'm not with my books right now, but all this info has been
published, right? Or is R&R the only missing this kind of info?

I believe Robin is requesting that we publish the actual Bubbling Under charts as they appeared in the original
publication(s). I don't see that happening any time soon.

That's too bad. I get it. But it would be nice to see those charts, too.
