has anyone noticed that the 45 is faded out to 3:56 and edits out the faint ending vocal "relax don't do it" from the cd version listed below

rather odd...
maybe it should be mentioned in the db
also....
some versions on cd's have a delayed fade in by about 0:02 versus the 45 version...

Ed, I'm glad you brought this up, because this song has puzzled me for years. I always thought that something sounded "wrong" with the CD versions I had, but I could never put my finger on it. Well, I just finally pulled out my 12" (my 45 is not accessible) and sure enough, there are two different MIXES of this song.
Is this a difference between the 45 and LP versions, or is it a difference between the 1983 and 1985 versions? (The latter release year was when it became the hit.)
Unfortunately, I don't have my 45 readily available to verify, but my 12" states 7" Version (3:56) (actual run time is (3:54), and it is definitely different than all the (3:55) versions I have on CD. The mix on my 12" sounds very much like the 45 that I have packed away (which I purchased in 1985). Here's my findings:
(For purposes of comparison, I'll used "LP version" to mean the one commonly found on CD.)
- Most CD versions start with a synth fade in and then at about (0:02) you hear another synth note on top of the first. On the 7" mix, the fade in starts with the second synth note, which has a bunch of echo/reverb added to it when comparted with the LP version.
- On the 7" version, you hear an echoey "bass" drum at (0:16) that is not present on the LP version.
- 7" version runs ever-so-slightly faster (speed).
- Hand claps during the chorus are mixed much louder on the LP version, whereas they are buried on the 7" version.
- After the chorus, there's the vocal "when you wanna come" repeated a few times, and there's a guitar lick in between the vocals. This guitar is mixed louder on the LP version compared to the 7" version.
- On the fadeout of the LP version the vocal that echoes "come" repeats with pretty much no music behind it. On the 7" version, the echoing vocal fades out completely, while a synth note is still present and fading.
There are other mix differences, but those are the most obvious. Ed, are you saying that the version on New Wave Hits of the 80s, Vol 13 has the correct 45 version? Does your 45 match my description? Do you have two different 45s from the two different years it was released?

The Original U.S. single (from 4/84) had a stated time of 3:02, and the second release (from 1/85) had a stated time of 3:56. Both singles share the same catalog #. The major difference between the two (outside of the fact that it's 54 seconds shorter) is the ending is missing the final "come", and rather ends with a "hey".

Chuck, thanks for the info! So, that would mean there is a difference between the LP and 45 versions (from '85), which both run right around (3:55). I'll leave it up to Pat to determine which CDs have the 45 version (assuming my 12" has the same 3:55 version as the 45) and which have the LP version.
A couple more comments/questions... Chuck says that the '84 version has a stated run time of (3:02), which would match the version in the database having the (edited) comment (The Island Story). I'm guessing this is actually the first, non-hit 45 version. Also, I'm curious to know what the comment "with previously unreleased :02 reprise" refers to. Does anyone have one of these discs? (Rhino Instant Party - Disco Boogie and Best Of The 80s - 20th Century Masters...)

I just listened to the two versions of this I have on CD, and indeed they are different (I never noticed...doh!).
The Time-Life "Sounds Of The Eighties 1985" sounds like aaronk's description of the LP version while my other CD "Island Life" (a promo for Sam the Record Man, 1987 CID-8664 Island Canada dist'd by MCA) sounds like the 45 (note this does NOT contain the same versions of songs as "The Island Story").
what I don't hear on either is a faint ending vocal "relax don't do it". Also, I can't tell what the chorus is to listen for handclaps or the guitar lick....
We've got another one for Pat to sort out!

The first time the lead vocal starts with "Relax, don't do it" etc., there are some hand claps at this point. The guitar lick is in the part at the end of the chorus and before the verse starts. Like this:

I cannot verify which of the versions mentioned above are the commercial 7" 45 version as I have 2 dj copies, one with catalog number PR 695 is the LP version and the other, PR600 is the version mentioned by Aaron that he found on the 12" single that calls it the 7" mix. If anyone has the commercial 7" vinyl 45 can you let me know which version appears on your commercial single?
Now for those that are confused by the comment ":02 previously unreleased reprise", this is what Ed is talking about when he started this thread. After the music has ended, there is a brief "relax don't do it" sung a cappella. I have never found this reprise on any vinyl release.

aaron....the 45 version i have and the version from the "new wave hits" cd are identical except for the faint vocals at the end......if you fade it out to 3:56 you'd have the true 45 version......edtop40

Pat, although I don't have my commerical copy handy, I can say with 95% certainty that mine has the 7" Mix. As I said earlier, when I heard the CD versions of this song years later, I always thought something sounded wrong with them. Hopefully someone will be able to confirm this for sure.
I might be able to shed some light on the "relax don't do it" a cappella part. Without hearing the CD, I'll guess that it's from the 12" release that I have. On side B (which contains the 7" version), there is a second track with a printed run time of (4:24). (On the jacket to the 12", it's labeled "Instrumental"; however, on the record label it says "Vocal.") It is an instrumental track, except for the a cappella beginning. On the record, as soon as the 7" version has faded all the way out, this vocal fades in a cappella.
