Indeep only took Last Night A DJ Saved My Life to #101 in 1983 but over the years became a huge hit around the world and was the only hit for both Indeep and their record label, Sound of New York / Becket Records.

The LP version and the 12" version appear to be identical {EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST BEAT AS JASON POINTS OUT BELOW}, 5:40 in length according to the label. The 12" also contains a 3 minute acapella version.

The 7" single and the radio promo appear to be identical to each other, with a listed length of 4:16.

I have two sources for the 7" single: Back To The 80's Volume 2, and Culture Dance Vol 3. BTT80s sounds like it might be from vinyl. However, they stay perfectly in sync, suggesting the same original digital master. Both fade earlier than 4:16, one at 4:10 and the other at 4:11.

I then have "Now That's What I Call 80s Dance" (a generally terrible source for anything) which has a 4:28 length version. After that comes "The Disco Years, Volume 2; On The Beat" with a 4:45 version.

Finally, the LP / 12" version appears on Dance Classics Vol. 13 and Grand 12 Inches Vol. 1. The left and right channels appear to be reversed from each other; I don't know which is correct but the Grand 12 Inches collection is generally excellent.

All six versions I have are the identical mix, and all under 5:40 are early fades or edits and early fades (TWIC80sD has a slight edit near the end).

My only question is how long the original 45 really was. I'm suspecting the audio will fade to silence right before 4:14. If someone could check the length or get me access to a recording of the original 45 all the way out to the end groove, we could know exactly how long the single version should be.

Thanks to Chuck I can confirm:

#1 - that the version on Grand 12 Inches is almost identical in speed to the 7" single (less than 0.1% speed difference)

and

#2 - the 7" is longer than any alleged single versions I have, running at least 4:13.658. The difference between where my audio file of the single cuts off and where I faded my recreation to is 0.370 seconds (mine being that much longer), so... pretty close. :-)

The fade starts at 4:03, lasting approximately 11 seconds.

The mixes and performances are identical {EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST BEAT AS JASON POINTS OUT BELOW}.

And here's another one... Back in the summer of '90, my store bought a bunch of
Indeep - 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' on some label called 'Dance Classics'. It
almost reminded me of the 45 RPM singles that we got out of Canada on Underground
Records. This one states the time as 3:05 but clocks in at 3:00.8. Where this edit
came from, whose to say, but it's a shorty. -Bill.

However, aren't the 45 version and the LP version
different mixes? The 45 version starts with a cymbal
crash over the drums, whereas the LP version does not.
So, in other words, the 45 version cannot be re-
created from the LP version. Or, am I missing
something?

Also, in the YouTube clip that I posted above (with
apparently someone playing the 45), the "last" in
"last night a DJ saved my life" can be heard right
around the 4:13-4:14 before fading out completely.
(Note that it's about 4:32 in that YouTube video).

Oh my goodness... Jason, you're right. Appears I was just moving too fast on this one.

I even checked to see if you could grab the downbeat with the cymbal crash from elsewhere in the 12" but I couldn't find a suitable clip.

Based on this, the 7" CANNOT be created from the 12".

I'll edit my post above to reflect this.

EDIT

Very odd; my mixes are all over the place as far as that first cymbal crash:

Back To The 80s Vol. 2 (4:10) -- no crash
Culture Dance Vol. 3 (4:11) -- no crash
Now That's What I Call 80s Dance (4:28) -- crash
The Disco Years Vol. 2 On The Beat (4:45) -- crash
Dance Classics Vol. 13 (5:39) -- no crash
Grand 12 Inches Vol. 1 (5:40) -- no crash

That would make the first two early fades of the 12", while the 4:28 & 4:45 are extended versions of the single mix? (There's an edit on the "NTWIC80sD" track.)

I'd recommend grabbing the opening four beats from The Disco Years and tacking it on to the Grand 12 Inches version to recreate the 7" single.

Okay. Glad that it was not just me! I quite like the
mastering on "The Disco Box", so I am using that as my
source and fading out early in order to re-create the 7"
version.

I'm glad the 45 was posted on YouTube (that poster had
disappeared for a while) and that the 45 fade can easily be
recreated. Turns out what I had originally was nothing
close to what the actual 45 was.
