This song just was outside the 1995 Top 40 (#42) but originated on 1988's self-titled Melissa Ethridge album.

On the coattails of Yes I Am, a huge album for Etheridge (Come To My Window, I'm The Only One, If I Wanted To) she was riding high on a peak of airplay she had never had before.

Upon research there was no 1995 CD single for the hit. All CD singles for If I Wanted To had a live version of the song. The cassette appears the only place and reason (B-Side) that it charted. The Whitburn annual does not mention its an airplay hit or B-Side but that would be the only explanation for its chart presence.

There is an edit in 1988 on the 12'' does anyone remember if that got played. I remember the song itself having huge airplay in New York. Yes I Am exploded in 1994 and 1995 and she was basically out of hits on the album if I recall which is why they made a decision to grab the 1988 hit and throw it to radio stations who wanted something new to play.

Paul the album version runs longer than 5:15. Is the cassette where the ability to chart came from in 1995?

I would assume that the "If I Wanted To" cassette single,
which included the original LP version of "Like the Way I
Do", is the reason that it charted as a two-sided hit on
the Hot 100. According to my Billboard book, "Like the Way
I Do" peaked at No. 57 on Hot 100 airplay in 1995. Cashbox
charted them together as one position (No. 9). I recall
hearing "Like the Way I Do" on the radio quite a bit back
then.

The only version I seem to have is on a GoldDisc, 795N 06.

This doesn't sound like a "Live" cut to me. Also runs 4:17 on the player, but seems to be more like 4:12 in play mode.

It may be one of those unauthorized TM Century edits from an LP Version. And, I have no way to know if they got it right or not.
I'm sure Aaron might be more likely to clue us into the details of the cut and version, as it has no detail in my database.
