Here's another one for the class. While trying to find out some info about the single version of Meat Loaf's "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth," I ran across a DJ reservice 45 that was available (and me without a turntable). One side had an edit that runs (3:40) according to the label, the other has the (5:04) LP version. My question is: Is there any way to construct the (3:40) version from the (5:04) version (and was the commercial single one of those two sides, or a different version entirely)?
Thanks as always.

Sure. Where's it from, for my own edification?
EDIT: Wow. 300 posts.

Is the "proper 45 version" the same as the album version without the spoken intro?

That would only shave about 48 seconds off the song length (I tried making an edit last night, just chopping off the opening, and wound up with a (4:16) length).

Although not in the database, this song peaked at #39 in Billboard, in 1/79. I only own a promo 45 for this. Unlike the (3:40/5:04) promo 45 that Doug said he browsed back in this thread's initial post, my promo has a listed (3:40) timing, for both the mono and stereo sides. The actual time for both sides, however, is (3:48).

The commercial 45 omits the spoken intro, has one edit and an early fade. It runs 3:48.

Anyone know, perhaps, where the edit occurs in the song to bring it to 3:48?

Just picked a near mint promo 45 for this song. Listed 3:40 on both stereo/mono sides. Only dubbed the stereo side, which runs 3:48. Imagine this is identical to Jim's promo with deadwax ZSS 164982.

Instructions for edit:
Chop off intro.
Edit on the word "took" at 2:36 of remaining audio, removing 19 seconds.
Last part you hear on the fade of the 45 is "...kissing me." The next hand claps are not present. Without modifying the pitch of the LP version, the run time is (3:49). The 45 runs just a smidge faster, but not worth noting.

I've always tried to keep an eye out for a long/short promo copy of this,
that Doug says he saw in his initial post. (Doug's got mad cred with me - I
believe the dude!) :) Still no luck. Just as a point of interest, "You Took
The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" was actually the first 45 issued from
"Bat Out Of Hell." Whereas the 45 release that hit #39 in BB in 1/79 was
Epic 50634, its original, non-hit 45 release was back in 11/77, as Epic
50467. FYI, the promo 45 I own for this release (with is also mono/stereo,
listed (3:40) both sides) also has a bit of "extra title" tacked onto it. It
adds "(Hot Summer Night)" to the end.
And, as a person who's been burned before by such stock # differences
(meaning I bought a copy with a non-hit stock #, without realizing it), I
just wanted to post this additional info, as a heads-up to anyone who
might be looking for it. There were two different stock 45 releases!

Just for the record, I'd like to add that the original release of this song (on 50467) did hit #73 in Record World (as shown in our "Hit Records" book) and #97 in Cash Box (to be shown in a future Record Research book).

I can testify that it does exist...I have my copy in front
of me right now. It's marked as being a DJ RESERVICE.

Paul, thanks for noting that this song charted on Cashbox and Record World back in its original issue. Our FM top 40 in Cleveland, WGCL (G-98), played that song a million times during it original release. I started listening weekly to AT40 in January 1979 and was surprised to hear this song debut shortly after that. G-98 was playing it as a recurrent occasionally, but it was not in full rotation when it hit the top 40. I wonder if its split airplay (some in '77, some in '79) prevented it from charting higher during its '79 chart run.

In case anyone else needs to know what CDs
have the 45 edit there are at least two budget CD releases
that have it:
Forever Rock Vol. 3 Sony Music Special Products 26462
Rock Giants Volume 3 Platinum Disc Corporation 15902
