My wife and I recently moved into our first actual home
that we own (as opposed to apartment renting), and I have
been setting up my stereo equipment and unboxing some of
my 45's. I came across a pile of 45s I got recently but
had not had a chance to go through. One of them being a
promo 45 of Just A Little by the Beau Brummels. As I
played it, it sounded identical to the version on my
computer, which had at one time been ripped from a Time
Life Classic Rock: 1965 cd, which I unfortunately no
longer own. Now, my CD rip dumps the song during the
drums at the end at around 2:21, completely missing the
bass drum kick and cowbell hit that end my 45, and I have
no other versions on cd to compare to. The version posted
to Youtube by The45Prof matches my 45.

So, I guess my question is, are all stereo versions on cd
this way, or are there any that actually do contain the
full 45 version in stereo?

Hi Tom. Does your 1965 promo 45 have "Just A Little" on both sides? If it does, please play the other side and see if it matches your CD rip. Is your promo 45 on the Autumn label?

I just played both the 45 and LP versions off of CDs listed in the online database. Here is what I discovered:

Time-Life 2CLR-01 Classic Rock-1965 (stereo 45 version) has the drums at the end plus the cowbell (but you have to turn the volume up to hear it).

Time-Life 21786 Flower Power-Time Of The Season (stereo LP version) is missing the cowbell at the very end.

Is it possible one side of the promo 45 has the LP version? Remember, you have to turn up the volume some to hear that 45 ending.

Santi, my promo 45 is the white label
variation shown on the second image at
https:
//www.45cat.com/record/10a
which has
the exact same recording on both sides.

As I mentioned before, I no longer have my
cd of Classic Rock 1965, but it dumps the
song early before the bass drum kick and
cowbell. Those are absolutely not present on
my mp3 rip, as it faded out before it got to
them. The 45 does not fade out during these
parts. That suggests to me that there may be
two versions of the Classic Rock 1965 cd.
Unfortunately it doesn't help me out with
finding the un-faded 45 ending in stereo
yet.

Tom - I'm not sure about your mp3 file, but there's only one pressing of Time-Life's Classic Rock Vol. 1 1965 (1987), and it does indeed include the bass drum and cowbell.

That disc uses relatively high-generation source tapes, though, and doesn't sound very good.

I recommend these:

Rhino's Nuggets (1986) for the stereo 45 version

Rhino's San Francisco Nights (1991) for the mono 45 version

Rhino's Billboard Top Pop Hits 1965 (1995) for the stereo LP version

Yup, a clean sweep for Rhino.

I have to wonder, then, if my ripping
program from who knows how many decades ago,
was automatically fading songs early. I
don't know if I kept any other mp3's from
that disc to compare to. Now I wish I'd kept
that cd, too!
