I recall hearing on the radio in the Milwaukee area in
1984 a version of "The Heart Of Rock & Roll" by Huey
Lewis & The News where Lewis yells "Milwaukee" towards
the end. That's essentially become my white whale radio
version of a song -- since I now work on a classic hits
station up in Eau Claire, WI, I'd play that version (he
apparently also said "Minneapolis!" in that one) on the
radio...if a copy still exists.

I understand there were other custom versions, and I
happened across a Canadian/international one that did
make its way to YouTube:

Heart Of
Rock & Roll Alternate Versions

Does anyone know if any other custom versions -- and,
particularly, that "Milwaukee/Minneapolis" one -- are
still around somewhere?

I have the “Knoxville-Nashville, Tennessee” version on my YouTube channel.
Huey Lews
and the News - Heart of Rock & Roll (Knoxville-Nashville, TN version)

As for “We Built This City”, I have the four versions that were used on
WCBS-FM in New York uploaded here.
Starship - We Built This City (WCBS-FM
New York Custom Versions)
.

I have a couple other local versions of the Starship song, but I haven’t
posted them anywhere.

We did our own local version at K104 in Erie PA in 1985 but
unfortunately I don't own a copy nor know anyone from back
then that does.

Huey did one for Chicago (adding Kansas City as well)--WLS-AM/FM in Chicago played it to death. There's an aircheck of WLS
floating around on Mixcloud that has it.

I Googled "Mixcloud" for Milwaukee & Minneapolis stations
after reading your post, and stumbled across -- on the
Internet Archive -- a cassette tape recording of
"Countdown '84" by WLOL in Minneapolis. Partway through
segment 11, there was the "Minneapolis! Milwaukee!"
version:

WLOL
"Countdown '84"

Digitized by our very own Ron G. Fun to hear that.

Neat-o! I didn't realize that was on there! Thank you, Internet Archive!

There was one made for "Syracuse-Albany" which was played on WTRY, but unfortunately I didn't save the tape.

I used a web-based AI to try and remove the instrumental
backing from this aircheck and mix it over a CD source.
Turned out ok, but the resolution on the aircheck is so
low that it's not a perfect re-creation. I'm optimistic
that at the rate AI is improving, I'll someday be able to
"upscale" the resolution on the radio source to create a
near-perfect version for this and several other custom
radio station versions.

You guys ran a great station. What shift would I have heard you on? Any airchecks?

I did weekend overnights and some daytime fill in as "Jeff
O'Brien" until February of 1985 when they moved me to full-
time overnights from 1985-January, 1988. I have a couple
of airchecks on a cassette somewhere, one from 1984 and one
from 1986. Of course, no way to transfer it once I would
find the tape.
