Does the top-40 hit "Hootenanny" by The Glencoves exist on CD in any country (in stereo??).

Did it exist in stereo on vinyl?

Andy: I have spent some good time & effort over the years trying to track this down on anything but the original 1963 Select 724 mono 45, which I have. They had 3 follow-up singles on Select, but no LP was ever released. I believe L.I.'s Glencoves may have had an EP put out in England, but I have no other details. Hard to say if a stereo master exists. If it does, it was likely unreleased on vinyl, due to no LP. "Hootenanny" seems to appear on a 1977 Canadian Hootenanny-themed V/A LP - it's ONLY appearance on an LP that I know of. I would say this EP & LP are your only two VERY slim hopes to find stereo on it. Either could also turn out to be a re-recording, however. It isn't even on CD in mono, in any country, to my best researched knowledge. My 10-CD Ace UK Import series 1954-1963 "Golden Age Of Hot 100 American Rock 'N Roll", FEASTS on songs like "Hootenanny", but it does NOT appear. Another board, featuring re-issue compilers, has been broached on this subject. The "expert" said he believed the "Select" record label is currently privately owned, likely making it especially difficult to both locate the original master tapes, and license it for a V/A CD comp. Its non-inclusion on my import series would support that statement. Another "world-class" toughie from Mr. Chouffi. Just trying to be of help to you, sir. Good luck, Andy!

It really is a good, catchy song for those that don't remember it.

    "Hootenanny" by The Glencoves is now available on an
Australian import CD called "Hazy Memories Vol. 2" on
the Canetoad label. It can be ordered through Amazon
or maybe Mike at DisCollector can get it for you. I
don't know whether or not it's in stereo, but at least it made it to CD somewhere. Hope this helps.

The thing is, has anyone heard the CD?

Somehow, by just checking it out, it screams of "grey area" needledrop (but my comment is pure conjecture).

The cd is grey area. That song is a mono needle drop on it. I dont own the cd but that is what was posted about it on BSN a while back (when i brought up a message asking about who actually owns the Select masters, and never even got an answer to that question!).

A few years ago, my dad told me of a song that he knew when growing up called It's Sister Jenny's Turn To Throw The Bomb, and when I got my first (i own two now) copy of the Glencoves 45 of Hootenany, i noticed immediately that the B side was It's Sister Ginny's Turn To Throw The Bomb...same song, and it's a great one too...both songs were recorded live in the student lounge at Fink University, but only the B side had audience applause and laughter on it. Chances are it was only ever recorded on a mono tape deck. Brian Bolger, lead singer of the Glencoves, reportedly lives on the outskirts of my hometown, Frederick, MD....two of his children are a popular folk duo now (Judd & Maggie, signed to RCA Victor) and I tried to contact them to get me in touch with their dad, but no such luck so far....

I knew Ace (U.K.) would come through sooner or later for us on this one! "The Golden Age Of American Popular Music: The Folk Hits" (CDCHD 1175) is one of the four "collectors-must-have" 2008 releases in this amazing series (along with "American Popular Music" Vols. 1 & 2, and "The Jazz Hits" (which has Eddie Harris' 1961 Top 40 hit "Exodus" on it, FYI). "The Folk Hits" has "Hootenanny" on it. It is the original, Select 45 version, and it is in mono (23 of the 28 tracks on this CD are in stereo, FYI, so this tune just must not exist in stereo.) It is from a tape source, and I have now concluded that this is probably the lowest-technical-quality recording to make the U.S. Top 40 in 1963. Probably due to the "live" nature of the recording, and no doubt using portable recorders with back-in-the-day technology, as Tom cites earlier in this thread, it certainly reveals these sound limitations. For the record, I have never bought an Ace (U.K.) CD (and I own many), and then later heard the same song issued in higher-quality CD sound, so I personally believe this is the best sound we will ever locate for this track, which it says has been licensed by President Records. As, and always, other rare U.S. charters make their CD or 45 version debut on this disc as well.

Actually, Hootenanny by the Glencoves on the ACE cd is a direct digital copy of it off of The Joy/Select Story which is put out by President Records, who owns the Joy/Select masters. Sadly, the song is a disc dub on this cd, meaning it is also a disc dub on the ACE cd as well. I was told personally that ACE felt the song sounded good enough on the Joy/Select story that it was pointless to try to find a mint 45 to master the song themselves. I disagreed, as there are some spots in the recording on the cd where some extra hiss could be heard, and i attribute that to the 45, as they were pressed on rather low quality vinyl that was fairly hissy (i own two pressings, with different letters on the label, 45K vs 45P so i suspect different pressing plants, but same sound quality).

Interestingly, I'm not entirely sure that Hootenany was actually recorded in the Fink University student center...it has a different sound quality than the B side of the 45 (which was live, while Hootenanny has no crowd noise) and the flipside doesnt have the same type of echo on it (on the handclaps), so perhaps at least some overdubbing was done in a real studio...however the overall sound quality is the same on their subsuquent releases...which were ALL better than Hootenanny, i wish they'd been with a better record company, they could've had a big career. Their 45s sound horrible though, which really prevented radio play, no doubt.

Thanks for the insight, Tom - great stuff. There is simply an amazing amount of knowledge on this Board, especially regarding imports not in Pat's db, that I greatly benefit from. I had never known about that "The Joy/Select Story" CD you just mentioned, for instance, or all of the different import CD sources for John Miles "Highfly", that Gordon recently and kindly shared.) I would just like to encourage Tom, Gordon and anyone else with personal knowledge of quality, import CD pressings that include missing database/non-db hits, to please share what they know with us, here on the Board. I know we all have hectic, busy lives. And I, for one, have always tried to inform/alert others here when I happen upon an import source for songs like these. So, when time allows, please guys, post what you know, because chances are, we don't know about them!   :)
