Since there are many "Are the hit mixes on CD?" inquiries popping up about those hard-to-locate, late 80's hits, I thought I'd just pull out and list what I DO have, on either Promo or Import CD singles, for the benefit of the group. I'm not gonna listen for actual times; I'll list printed times. If anyone has follow-up questions, I'll do my best to address them:

Heart-"Alone" (DPRO-79024)1-(no listed time) (3:35)

Whitney Houston-"I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" (ASCD-9599)
1-Single Version (4:52)
2-12" Remix-Radio Edit (4:51)
3-12" Remix (8:33)

Aretha Franklin & George MIchael-"I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" (ASCD-9560)
1-Album Version (4:01)
2-Edited Remix (From The 12" Single) (5:29)

Michael Jackson-"Bad" (ESK 2808)

2-7" Single Mix (4:05)
3-Dance Remix Radio Edit (4:50)
4-Dub Version (4:05)
5-A Cappella (3:49)

Belinda Carlisle-"Heaven Is A Place On Earth" (CD45-17397)
1-(4:05)

Michael Jackson-"I Just Can't Stop Loving You" (ESK-2750)
1-(4:10)

Fleetwood Mac-"Little Lies" (PRO-CD-2821)
1-LP Version (3:38)
2-Extended Version 12" Mix (6:15)

Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine-"Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" (ASK 2700)
1-7" version (no time listed) (3:53)
2-12" version (no time listed)
3-Dub Mix (no time listed)

Fleetwood Mac-"Big Love" (PRO-CD-2710)
1-(3:37)

John Cougar Mellencamp-"Paper In Fire" (CDP 03)
1-(3:53)

We received import CD singles as well, to use on-air - I will include them, and others, as I come upon them filed:

George Michael-"I Want Your Sex"
1-Monogamy Mix (13:13)
2-Rhythm 1 Lust (no listed time)
3-Rhythm 2 Brass In Love (no listed time)
4-Rhythm 3 A Last Request (no listed time)

Genesis-"Tonight, Tonight, Tonight"
1-Edited Remix (this was the popular remix version that radio played) (no listed time) (4:24)
2-(Different track)
3-(Different track)
4-12" remix (no listed time)

ABC-"When Smokey Sings"
1-7" version (4:21)
2-(Different track)
3-(Different track)
4-The Miami Mix (7:02)

Much more to come, if there is sufficient interest.

Thanks for the info, Jim! Though I believe (I assume) the listing for tracks 2-4 on "I Want Your Sex" is simply a breakdown of the three parts of track one, which would be the long version of the song. That would explain why there's no running time listed on tracks 2-4.

The long version was also issued on an import CD single and a domestic 3-inch. (Though the domestic version strangely seemed to use the compressed analog cutting master of this digital recording. The domestic 3-inch also clips the first note of Part II of the song, which the import does not.)

Thanks, Brian. Again, I'm just sort-of "mass-producing" this information. Import CD singles are notorious for vague details, no listed cut #s, etc. I wasn't gonna list 'em AT ALL, but there are several desired versions on some that MAY make them of interest to the group. I'd just like to reiterate that, with THIS many songs involved, I'm only providing "thumbnail" details; not my usual double/triple-checking of "every little detail." Remember, I'm NOT playing them, to check listed details. I hope that this has been noted, and that what I AM providing will still be of help.

Johann: As for "which year?", I file my stuff using the Joel Whitburn/Billboard books. He lists "So Emotional", "Seasons Change", "Hazy Shade Of Winter", "There's The Girl" and "Could've Been" as ALL reaching their chart peak during 1988, although they probably first came out in the final weeks of 1987. Some interesting additions nonetheless, my friend.

Jim, what is the catalog number of your "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" single?

Mine is DRAW412, and the reason I ask is because although the disc itself lists it as "remix", it plays a shorter album version with no added production.

Or does the fact that there is a "blend" of sections at 2:39 and not a "cold" cut make it eligible to be called "Remix"?

I have the same one, Johann, DRAW412. To answer your question as to wording, the outer paper sleeve for Cut 1 says "Edited Version", and on the CD itself, Cut 1 says "Remix." I have NO idea why the record companies use certain words to describe mixes. Yes, there are "common sense" conclusions we can draw, but I'm just trying to duplicate whatever it says on the CD single itself, to provide the the group.

My description of "popular remix" next to "Tonight..." MAY have been an error, Johann. The Whitburn book says (4:32) for the 45 time - our CD is 4:24. I KNOW we got two "Land Of Confusion" promo 45s; I THOUGHT we also got two for "Tonight...", but I could be wrong - I will go through my '87 promo 45 box later tonight to check. I know the song well, but I can't dissect the "note-for-note" of hit songs like you guys can. Therefore, I am not qualified to offer you an accurate opinion on that.

Ed: For the "key" versions, containing "no listed time", I DID go to the bother to time them myself. The (4:31) timing came from my stop watch, nowhere else. So it sounds like another "good news, Mad About You" for you, with those FEW extra missing seconds you've been looking for being included on my promo CD single.

I don't have a copy of the 12" vinyl single for verification, but I'm almost certain the "Little Lies" Extended Version 12" Mix appears on the various artist CD Lost Mixes: Rare Rock Mixes (JCI 3122). The database currently describes the 6:14 version appearing on this CD as: (remixed) .

If anybody is interested in more versions of "Little Lies" on CD, the dub is available on the German "I Do" CD single (1995).

Track listing is:

I Do (Edit)
Talkin' To My Heart
Little Lies (Extended Version)
Little Lies (Dub)

I recently picked up a promo cd single for this when i was visiting my old hometown of Frederick, MD. I hesitated spending $4.90 for a cd with only two tracks on it (long and short versions) but being that this was one of my all time favorite songs as a kid growing up in the late 80's and the 90's, i had to get it.

The long version reads 5:52 in winamp (also in musicmatch jukebox) and fades out at 5:46. The short version reads 4:35 in winamp (and musicmatch jukebox) and fades out at 4:33. While i do own the single in both grey and black vinyl pressings, neither is accessable at the moment for comparison to the cd single. I will gladly shoot out a dub of the short version off of this cd to anyone that wants it, though.

Tom:

If I'm not mistaken, the short version of "Touch of Grey" on your promo CD single is the same as the 45 version, which has been issued on a number of CDs. However, a quick check of the database shows the 45 version runs :03-:04 short on most of these CDs, so I would be interested in a wave file dub of your promo.

By the way, since this thread has come back up, can anyone verify if the "Extended Version 12-Inch Mix" on the Fleetwood Mac "Little Lies" promo CD single is what appears on the Lost Mixes: Rare Rock Mixes various artist CD (JCI 3122)? The run times match up, which leads me to believe they may be the same verson.
