I've been trying to determine if the single version of this tune can be
gotten from editing any of the mono versions available. I took the
version from Your Hit Parade 1959 (Time-Life HPD 13), and
edited out from approximately 1:46 to 2:07, which brings it down to
2:58. The problem I'm having is that the original 45 that I'm using is
in VG-- shape. So I'm asking, is the edit the only difference, or is
there a difference in the mix? If anyone else has a good copy of the
45, I'd really like to know. Thanks.

Yes, you can edit the 45 version from the YHP version. But it seems like you have to increase the volume after the edit point... seems like it grows a bit louder there on the 45.
