Pat & others,

Recently over at the Steve Hoffman forum, we had an interesting discussion about how many versions of this classic hit are available on CD. It gets confusing for a number of reasons primarily due to which tapes are used and mastering choices. Since "The Wanderer" is my favorite single of the "golden age" of Top 40 Radio, I have attempted to collect every version available. To date, I have the following versions:

1) Dry stereo version
2) Wet Stereo version
3) New Stereo mix with a cold-ending. Please note that this mix is different from the vintage mix and has what sounds like digital compression and echo added during the mix.
4) Take 1, Stereo. The Master is Take 2.

Is the original Mono "hit" single mix available on CD? I have searched for years and I have never uncovered it? I recently obtained a mp3 from an Australian CD but this may have been dubbed from a second generation tape and the mastering is less than steller.

Pat, good luck with your Forum and thanks!

Bob

The book says the version on Columbia's "Dion Greatest Hits" is mono. Is that the hit mix?

This is not a CD that I'm familiar with. Perhaps, OOP?

Thanks,

Bob

Bob, I pulled out the Dion's Greatest Hits cd, Columbia 31942 and my Laurie 45 of "The Wanderer" and they sound the same to me but I would like more information on what you call the "wet" and "dry" versions of this song. This cd was issued by Columbia in the 80's, runs all of 25:02, has 10 tracks, no liner notes and is 100% mono.

Hi Pat,

The best-sounding "dry" version [no echo] of the Stereo mix is on this Ace UK CD:

The best-sounding version of the "wet" version [echo-added] of the Stereo mix is on this Ace UK CD:

http://66.232.131.72/cgi-bin/SearchCatNo.asp?intSite=1&strPr odID=CDCHD347

Both of these versions sound as good as they do because the transfers made from the first generation Stereo master and because of mastering choices made by Ace UK Engineer, Duncan Cowell. Both sound better than versions issued here domestically by EMI. For pure sonic nirvana, the dry version is "the one". The echo gives the track a more "period" feel, however.

The key here is that the Stereo master is "dry" and the echo has to be added during mastering.

Thanks for the info on that 1980's Dion CD. I will have to see if I can track it down.

I hope I have answered your questions?

Bob

Hey, Bob, I tried that URL address you gave, but only got this error
message:

"Either BOF or EOF is True, or the current record has been deleted.
Requested operation requires a current record."

Tell me what this website is, and how it's supposed to work. If it's a
database of info on CDs (like CDDB), I'd like to know more about it.

Marc,

These discs are Ace UK discs. Let's see if I can give you good links here:

http://66.232.131.72/cgi-bin/SearchCatNo.asp?intSite=1&strPr odID=CDCH966

http://66.232.131.72/cgi-bin/SearchCatNo.asp?intSite=1&strPr odID=CDCHD347

The first link is for the "dry" Stereo mix while the second link is for the "wet" Stereo mix.

Bob
