pat

the 45's actual running time is 4:08 and not 4:00 as listed on the 45's label...

this should be noted in the db

Pat, I have some thoughts on the notation that you currently show for this song. The "Mony Mony" studio v was first released as a single (Chrysalis 2543) in September 1981, and "Bubbled Under", at #107, on Billboard. This actual (3:21) version was taken from the exact same recording as his 1987 DJ 45's "Single Edit", from his debut solo LP, "Don't Stop". The original LP v runs (5:01), but the 1981 45 was more highly edited than the 1987 "Single Edit". Perhaps inspired by what Capitol did for Duran Duran's "Save A Prayer", who also dredged up the old studio v to pair up on the 45 with the song's live v two years earlier, in 1985, Chrysalis chose to do the same thing here. But you currently state that "DJ copies of this 45 ran (4:15), which was called a 'Single Edit' which was not really a single edit because this version was a studio version." Pat, I wish that Chrysalis had instead titled this 1987, (4:15) DJ 45 version something clearer and more specific, like "Edit Of Studio Version", or "New Edit Of Studio Version". But it really IS still a "Single Edit", though, isn't it? The LP v ran longer, at (5:01). The question is, "A Single Edit of WHAT?" Just because it wasn't a "Single Edit" of the live v doesn't mean it's not a "Single Edit" at all, does it? I'm not trying to be difficult here, Pat, I'm only trying to help. And whatever you decide to do with your current song notation for "Mony Mony", I will support it.

Most CHR/Top-40 stations played the "single edit" even thought the commercial single AND the video contemporaneously on MTV was the "live" version.

Does anybody know the edit points for taking the 5 minute version down to the 4:15 DJ version?

I've been digging for the CDs listed in the database, & finally decided it would be easier for me to edit the album version. (Besides the fact that the CDs in the database all seem to be too short!)

Can anybody help?

If you mean the DJ edit for the studio version, it actually runs 3:21.

Actually, if you look at the above post, 3:21 was the original 1981 edit of the 5:01 album version; when the live version was released, they put out a less aggressive 4:15 edit of the 5:01 album version.

It's that second, "hit" edit (the one most of the Top-40s of the day were playing in 1987) that I'm looking for the edit points of.

I've played & heard the album version so long, I can't remember what should be missing!

I went huntin' for a promo 45 copy online, all of them contain "Shakin' All Over" as the 'B' side. Odd.

To eriejwg (John):

They must not be real promo copies; to the best of my knowledge only the commercial copies had "Shakin All Over" as the b-side.

The 4:15 "Single Edit" was actually designated as the AA side, rather than the B-side.

Were there two different 1987 DJ 45s, perhaps? I only have the A/AA copy shown in the label scan.

Yah Shure, you have the 4:15 single edit?

Could you post the edit points? This is one I'm having a terrible time getting a copy of...

Gene, I do have the 4:15 single edit 45, but not the longer studio cut, so I can't advise you on the edit points.

However, I can advise you to check your PM box. :)

Just noticed that the Chrysalis promo sampler Audio
Buffet 2
(1987) has both the live version and the 4:15
studio version.

Happy to send these out if anyone wants them. Both are
pretty hard to come by nowadays.

Ron, that specific sampler is exactly where we played the studio version from on-the-air back in 1987 - good that you also own a copy of it.

The live remake version of this song is on the CD Rockin' 80's Vol. 2 on the Madacy Entertainment label (1999 release) which is currently not listed in the database.

Thanks to Yah Shure, I can tell you that to take the 5 minute version down to the 4:15 DJ edit requires only one cut, from 3:13 to 3:54, on the beat.

Yah Shure, thank you for your help in figuring this out, & I hope this info helps someone else!

Anyone aware of CDs out there with the original 3:21
edit (preferably pre-mid 90's "loudness war")?

Hey everyone,

Is there a consensus on which version Top 40 primarily played in 1987?

I traveled around a lot in the northeast and heard the 1981 studio version
played all the time in 1987. Only heard the LIVE version on MTV and the
occasional American Top 40 countdown (I think). Also the current Idol album
at the time, Vital Idol, featured a studio remix.

But Joel Whitburn (and the 45 single) suggest that the LIVE version was the hit
version.

Was it?

Yes the live version is the hit version for this cover tune.

If you're going by what was on the A side of the commercial 45, then yes, the "Live" version is the hit. Like you, though, I never heard radio play the live version. I think a lot of stations played the flip side of the promo 45, which is the "Single Edit" (of the studio version).

I recall hearing the live version quite a bit on the radio
in 1987. Some stations played the studio version, but I
certainly considered the live version to be the hit
version at the time.
