the 45 states a run time of 4:58 but actually runs 5:03.....this might explain the discrepancy in the db.....the versions that are listed as 4:57 or 4:58 should be labeled as "lp & 45 version faded 0:05 early".....the people who put these compilations together probably thought because the 45 stated a run time of 4:58, that that should be the true run time, which is incorect.....

As an aside, there is at least one import album which has a version I could only label as "neither single nor album length" (unless somebody can dig this up as a DJ edit).

A friend got me a copy of "Best Of Ballads: Foreigner." It's an import, listed in Discogs as a German release but listed on Amazon as a Japanese import. (?)

This version runs 4:15. It is note-for-note identical to the version we're all familiar with; just an early fade.

Maybe you can consider this post a "buyer beware." :)

I don't think I've ever heard a different edit or length of Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is" other than the 5:03 45/LP length.

Found an even shorter one that supposed to be from a Time / Life collection: 4:01!

Again, just a VERY early fade; no edits. Makes you wonder if people were just trying to fit more songs on the CD or something...

I found one Australian collection that fades about 30 seconds early (5-CD Eighties Complete Vol. 1, released 1997), and everything else is the same version.
I'll trace the history...

I found two masterings that appeared in 1988.

One is Atlantic's Hit Singles 1980-1988 (1988). A List Disc 29 (1994) seems to be based on Hit Singles but with its absolute polarity inverted. EMI's 2-CD Now 1985 also seems to be based on Hit Singles. All sound so-so.

The other is Warner Special Products' 2-CD Love Songs (1988). Lots of other compilations use the same analog transfer as Love Songs, including Razor & Tie's 2-CD Awesome '80s (1994), JCI's Eighteen Rock Classics (1994), JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll 1985-1989 (1994), and Simitar's Love Rocks 3 Love Time (1998). These all sound fine - to my ears, just a hair better than Hit Singles.

In 1992, Ted Jensen did a fresh analog transfer for The Very Best And Beyond. This disc sounds outstanding, presumably due to very low-generation source tapes. Lots of other compilations use the same analog transfer as Very Best, including Time-Life's Rolling Stone 1982-1986 (1993), Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 2 1985 (1994), Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 6 Only You (1996), Warner Special Products' 2-CD Midnight Rock (2000), Time-Life's 2-CD Singers And Songwriters Vol. 13 1979-1989 (2001), and Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Soft Rock Ride Like The Wind (2006). All of these sound terrific.

Then there are a few that are extremely loud/compressed/maximized, including Rhino's Millennium New Love Songs (2001), Rhino's 7-CD Like Omigod (2002), and Rhino/Atlantic's Complete Greatest Hits (2002). In general, it's best to avoid Foreigner on Rhino.

I noticed today that the original stock 45 and Atlantic
Oldies Series reissue describe the listed 4:58 version
as an edit of the LP version.

All accounts above suggest that these are the same
version, so I wonder if anyone knows a story behind this
note? I think the single preceded the Agent Provocateur
release, so perhaps the album was slated to include a
longer version? Or might that note have described a
hypothetical 4:58 edit?

There was a 12" single version of this as well. It was an import for the U.S. I don't know if it appeared on a promo 12" here. I'll check the run time when I get home later.
The intro was slightly longer, and it featured an extra chorus at the end not heard in the 45/LP.

I always wondered if it was the original intended LP version.

First off, I 100% agree with everything Eric just said in his post.

Unless someone can physically produce a U.S. stock 12" single #0-86913,
I'm currently 100% convinced that Discogs incorrectly lists this item's
existence. During this time, I was paying extremely close attention to
what Top 40 hits were being released on 12" singles, both in the U.S. and
on import. If a U.S. stock 12" came out during this song's current hit run, I
would've noticed that, bought it, and still own it today. One of my local
mom and pop retailers at the time catered to local DJs, and took
stocking/locating 12" singles for them extremely seriously.

The *only* U.S. 12" release for "I Want To Know What Love Is" release that
I know to have ever existed is the promo 12" PR 681, which I own, and has
the stock/promo 45 version on both sides.

I also own the UK import 12", (A 9596), as currently documented on
Discogs, featuring the "extended version". At the time, I had determined
that the stock # 0-86913 12" release was unique to Australia, and was
otherwise a clone, version and track-wise, of the UK 12" single. I suspect
this is the 12" single Mark is referring to, and I share his opinion that,
early on, this longer version was under strong consideration to become
the LP version.

Thanks for the extra info Jim!

Yes, my 12" was the UK pressing. It also said "Extended
Version" but after hearing it I thought it might be the
actual full length session recording. The running time is
6:15. The intro has an extra measure that is edited off
the intro of the 45/LP, there is also one extra measure
of music after the first chorus, and in the last part
there are 2 extra choruses just before the female solo
comes from the New Jersey Mass Choir.

My guess as to why they chose the short version for the
LP is run-time of the album (not wanting to compress the
grooves too much, like the "Thriller" story...) But we'll
never know for sure.

This would have been a good bonus track for one of the
re-issues of the album.
