An unexpected discovery here: My commercial 45, which is mono, has a listed time of (2:50), but an actual time of (2:25)! For some reason, it omits the last :25 seconds of the song. The deadwax is "A-16235-1G". I NEVER recall hearing this shorter version on the radio in 1971. I also have a promo 45 for this, also mono, featuring the "full length" version I remember, with a listed time of (2:50), and an actual time of (2:51). The promo 45 deadwax is "A 16235 1A". I suspect my commercial 45 is NOT very common, and that most others mimic the promo. If anyone else owns a commercial 45 for this, perhaps they could time their copy and let us know?

My commercial copy (deadwax - 16235 RE1 - 2) timed out to 2:53...

My commercial 45 states a running time of (2:50) but runs (2:53) and has a matrix number of 16235-RE1 indicating that this is probably not the original version so your short version is probably the first pressing.

while we're on this topic... one of the great grabs from the early days (golden days?) of napster was "chirpy..." in stereo! i just timed this version and it was 2:28 (short version)... it sounds very clean and i'm wondering if this version is on an lp or import cd, since there is not stereo for this song indicated in the db... also, does anybody remember the other version of "chirpy" by lally stott? i can recall hearing both versions on the AM radio in the spring of '71, although the kissoon's version wasn't top 40 until the summer (maybe thus accounting for the timing difference - re-release version)... anyway, is the lally stott version available anywhere? thanks...

Jrjr, I have it on CD in stereo on a French Import, "The Swinging Soul Of Mac And Katie Kissoon...plus", on the "C5" label, catalog # CSCD-538. The actual time is (2:43), and sounds both SUBSTANTIALLY sped up and faded, just SLIGHTLY before the (2:50-ish) version. Lally Stott both wrote the song and had the original European hit with it. It did make the Hot 100, and I have a promo 45 for it. I do not know of a CD appearance, but there are many Import European 70's hit comps, and it probably has been included somewhere. A final note of trivia: Guess who recorded and released "Love Will Keep Us Together", as a U.S. 45, more than a YEAR before The Captain & Tennille? You guessed it - Mac & Katie Kissoon, as Bell 45436, b/w "I'm Up In Heaven." It was released right around the same time as Terry Jacks' "Seasons In The Sun" (Bell 45432), in January 1974. Their version of it also happens to appear on the Import "Hits" CD I mentioned earlier...

thanks again...

my stereo version (from an import CD "The Best Of & The Rest Of Original Hits Of The 70s") has a shorter fade-in and runs 2:39. It runs faster than the mono too.

ok, now there seems to be yet another "hit single" version of this simple, yet somehow complex song, done by the British band called (are you ready) "Middle of the Road" also in 1971... big hit in the U.K., nothing here stateside... has anybody heard or does anybody know where this version can be found??? i am curious...

yep! the song charted for Middle Of The Road 5 Jun 1971 in the U.K. reaching #1. I found it on iTunes, but it exists in several forms. None of them sound "right" to me. On allmusic.com, their "Greatest Hits" from 1999 allows a 30 second listen. THAT version sounds more authentic to me, but I'd never before heard their version.

Middle of the Road had 5 Top 40 hits in the UK. Chirpy being their first hit and only #1. The follow up "Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum" made it to #2.

Mac & Katie Kissoon had 3 Top 40 UK hits. Their version of Chirpy only made it to #41 in the UK though. Katie is still doing a lot of backing vocal work to this day.

I have all of Middle Of The Roads hits and Mac & Katies too for that matter.

The Mac and Katie Kissoon ABC label 45 sure sounds like a needledrop....

And Middle of the Road's version was an RCA single and album in the US.

I have a stereo version of "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" on a Dutch import CD called The Very Best of Mac & Katie Kissoon (BR Music BX 412-2) and it runs 2:43. Like David Clark pointed out earlier, the intro is shorter and runs faster than the mono 45. But I've also noticed that the stereo mix contains added reverb throughout the recording, while the 45 is more "dry" sounding.

So I'm wondering if this stereo mix first appeared on a parent Mac and Katie Kissoon LP? If so, then I would submit that the lone database CD appearance of this song should contain the comment: "long 45 version" (or something to that effect).

For those looking to grab the 2:26 stereo version, you can buy it on Amazon.
