My "Somebody's Watching You" commercial 45, which is mono, has a listed
time of (2:46), but an actual time of (2:55).

The other Little Sister song in the database, "You're the One" shows (part 2) as being the hit. According to Top Pop Singles the charting version in 1970 was (part 1).

Can someone verify which side was the hit.

Billboard Magazine didn't specify which side was the charter, in what I've been able to find in searching their back issues online....

I always wondered why Eric Records released both Part 1 & Part 2 combined of "You're The One" instead of just one side or the other.

You must have an older version of Top Pop Singles. The last couple of editions have shown Part II as the "hit" side.

with regards to the little sister song "somebody's watching
you"...if you slow the cd version from below down to 73.50
bpm's, you'll effectively match the vinyl 45 speed and
length of 2:54....

Ed, you must have an older edition of that book. We've since changed it to Part II as the "hit" side.

I can help with that:
Bill Buster researched a thread about it, i thought it
was on this board, but i can't find it - so it may have
been at the BSN site, or Hoffman, not sure it's been so
long.
Bottom line was, it seemed split down the middle as some
folks heard Part 1 in their market, while others heard
Part 2. It varied wildly throughout the country.
Well, the obvious solution was to release the entire
unedited version, since either part can be extracted from
it.   Yes, it's really long, but that way was no one was
left out.

paul, you're right about the old book...i was looking at
watson-guptill 6th edition of the top 40 hits book and i
do see it was changed to part 2 in the 9th
edition.....BUT....in the billboard 2005 hot 100 annual
book on page 244 it still says part 1....you might want
to make a note for future editions.....or was it changed
in a more recent issuance....

I can answer that one... the 8th edition of Pop Annual (released a few
months ago) is corrected to show Part II.

OK
It's been a few years but here's what i know:

The change-over in the long version is at exactly 3:28.

I don't have the exact 45 anymore, but from memory part 1
runs 3:15, and from the long version simply fade from
around 3 minutes until 3:15.
for part 2, there is no fade in, it picks up right at the
3:28 mark in the long one.   It cuts in abruptly when
they yell at the "Aahhhhh" part.   So you would use from
there to the end for part 2.
Addl. details about the 45 fades and run-time are
welcome...

thanks Markie.

There doesn't seem to be an LP for this band. Is the Eric CD the first time
stereo? Also, is it first time the parts are presented together? Also, the
complete version contains several seconds not present on either side of the
45, according to Markie's timings. Note the a-side of the 45 states a run
time of 3:30.

My timings are from faded memory .. hopefully someone has
the actual run times.

David, yes, this release was first time stereo and first
time released as one long take.
As far as i recall, the raw stereo tape was found by Bill
Inglot when he was in a vault looking for something else.
I'm just glad it came up for use someplace.

So yes, there might be a few seconds of audio just after
part one would have faded that we don't hear on the 45,
but there's nothing much unique there to hear.
I just remember we timed it out, because some folks were
sure they heard one or the other parts in their area, we
made sure both parts were present.

I timed Part 1 of "You're The One" at (3:30) and Part 2 at (3:13). There is a mono version of the song on the Ace UK CD, Listen To The Voices - Sly Stone In The Studio - 1965-70, that runs (5:21). It is missing the last part of Part 1 and the first part of Part 2. The Ace CD also has "Somebody's Watching You" in mono.

Great info, Paul! Do they sound like vinyl dubs, or were they taken from master tapes? Also, how much of "You're The One" is missing?

They definitely don't sound like vinyl dubs to me, Aaron.

I've tried to conduct a more accurate comparison of the version of "You're The One" on the Ace CD and the 45, and it now appears to me that the Ace version switches from Part 1 to Part 2 at (2:09) and then continues with all of Part 2. (So I now believe that my statement above that the first part of Part 2 is missing is incorrect.) It is a bit difficult to tell for sure, however, since the segment of Part 1 that starts at (2:09) is so similar to the first segment of Part 2 that it's hard to tell which segment is on the Ace CD. (The two segments sound so similar to me that it wouldn't surprise me if it's actually the same piece of tape.) The very last segment of Part 1 is definitely not on the Ace CD.

If there is any way you could send the file for me to hear, that would be
excellent :)
