For those who may have missed it, Wounded Bird has done it again: As of two days ago (Tuesday the 17th), Michael Sembello's top 40 hit from 1983, "Automatic Man", has now been made available on a U.S. CD for the first time! The label has re-issued the song's original 1983 parent album, "Bossa Nova Hotel" (catalog no. WOU 3920)...
I have yet to pick up the CD myself, so I'm afraid I can't quote a timing for the track, and don't know if the LP/CD version is different from the 45. The album also featured his #1 hit from the "Flashdance" soundtrack, "Maniac", but I don't know if the version on "Bossa Nova Hotel" - which hit store shelves some five months after the soundtrack - is different, as sometimes happens (while I bought the "Flashdance" soundtrack on cassette back in the day, I've never owned "Bossa Nova Hotel" in any format)...

Thanks for passing along the info! I'm only missing a handful of Top 40 hits from the '80s on CD so it's always nice to be able to cross another title off my list. The Wounded Bird label is indeed becoming a real gem for obtaining those remaining lost '80s hits!
Up to this point, I believe "Automatic Man" was only available on CD on the ultra expensive Japanese import release of Michael Sembello's Bossa Nova Hotel album, which I was never willing to splurge $35 or more for.
And, yes, there is a difference between the 45 and LP version of "Automatic Man". If memory serves me, there's an extra instrument or sound effect during the intro of the LP that's not present on the 45.

can anyone explain the 10 second difference between the 45 and LP version of "Maniac"? is it simply a matter of fade, or are there other differences (e.g., mix, edit, instrumentation, etc.)

If any of you guys want either the DJ single (mono/stereo) or stock 45 of Automatic Man, I pulled them out of the bin at the showroom at Recordfinders in Richmond. They are under my name (Bill Cahill) at the computer at the front of the showroom. Make em a reasonable offer, cause it's a pain to mail records you know? Both copies seemed to be near mint. If you guys don't want them, Gene will end up putting them back in the racks in the next week or so. Find the contact info at Recordfinders.com.

Fast Forward 8 years - I just located my 12" vinyl single of Automatic Man (which is pristine, as opposed to my 45 which is not) and am wondering if the makings of the 45 edit could be found on the 6:59 extended remix. Anyone know?

While the 45 isn't on CD, the LP version is now on Qobuz for the Bossa Nova Hotel album.
