Here are instructions for creating the 45 edit from the LP version on the X2 album (Reprise 25624-2, 1988).
Keep 0:00.0-3:03.5 until snare hit.
Edit out 3:03.5-3:12.1.
Keep 3:12.1-4:08.6 (to end of track).
This accurately recreates the 45 edit and the "edit" on the CD promo.
FYI, the CD promo is Reprise PRO-CD-2940, 1988, which includes:
1. strange but true (edit) printed 3:59 actual 3:58
2. strange but true (12" vocal remix) printed 6:53 actual 6:48
The version on Another Lost Decade: The '80s: Hard to Find Hits (Time-Life M19133, 2005) is a different mix than the LP and 45 versions.
