Can anyone tell me whether these singles differ from the albums due to editing, or mixing, or early fading?

Lonesome Loser - Little River Band
Leave a Light On - Belinda Carlisle
Love Changes (Everything) - Climie Fischer
September Morn - Neil Diamond
We Could Be Together - Debbie Gibson
American Storm - Bob Seger
I Could Not Ask For More - Edwin McCain (I know the mix is different but how is it shorter -- edit or early fade?)

Sorry to take so long to respond. The 45 version of "American
Storm" is 4:00, compared to the LP version, which is 4:18. There is
an edit at approximately 3:21, in which about 15 seconds is cut, and
then the 45 version begins its fade with 25 seconds to go. Hope this
helps.

"Lonesome Loser" and "September Morn" are edits (if memory serves, take the piano intro off of "September Morn" [leaving the chord right before Diamond's vocal] to replicate the 45).

I tried replicating LRB's "Lonesome Loser" edit, but I'm not sure if I quite nailed it (there are two edits to be made; I think I got one but I'm not sure of the other). The one LRB single I've had trouble with is "The Night Owls" (two edits and an early fade, but I can't seem to remember the second edit--and radio stations here usually play the LP version). Again, working without a turntable I'm at a disadvantage.

Any advice?

Doug

The two edits for "Lonesome Loser are during the intro, after the
opening vocals; the high voice part is edited out from about :23 to
:33 so just the higher vocal of the two remains. Then the other edit
is near the end, where they start repeating "Have you heard about
the lonesome loser" only; the second one is edited out. From there,
the song fades from 3:17 to the end at 3:29,so you'll need to fade
early from the LP version.

Boy, you're good. As luck would have it, there's an unscoped aircheck on Reelradio with the 45 version of "Lonesome Loser." The edits are as you describe them, although the edit at the end goes from the first "have you heard" to the guitar break following the second "have you heard." (Just in case you want to try replicating at home. :) ) Well done.

As an aside, unfortunately, the DJ does a little monkeying around with the cart (and the end comes way too abruptly) so the unscoped aircheck is not clean for just extracting the 45 right off of it.

Now, anyone got ideas on how to replicate "The Night Owls" single?

Yes, I can help out with that. Per my TM Century disc, here are the edits:

1) The intro is cut in half with the edit points right before the drum/cymbol hit at 6 1/2 seconds, and that same "hit" right before the first vocals.
2) If you're listening to the LP version (no edits), the next edit would splice out 2:26 to 2:42 on the first count of that measure. If you've already made the first edit, then the next edit would be at 2:19.
3) After making the first two edits, remove all audio past 3:51. Make your bell-curve fade out from 3:33 to 3:51.

Again, I don't have the actual 45 to check, but I'm pretty sure this one is correct on my TM disc.

Doug, in response to your post about the "Lonesome Loser" edit... I pulled out my TM Century disc for this one, too. I'm not sure if TM just did a sloppy job, or if the actual 45 version has bad edits. On theirs, they made the first edit on the high hat hit right before the vocal, rather than right on the "ooooh."

But the worst one is the second one. After the first "have you heard..." they made the edit on the snare hit, which then cuts to the second guitar break. You can hear the tail end of the reverb from the second "have you heard..." where the edit is, but it sounds choppy on my disc, like they made the edit a split second too soon instead of right on the snare hit. Does your copy sound like that also?

To be honest I'm not sure (again, I'm working with a radio station aircheck version). The edit I wound up making sounds pretty smooth (may not be an exact match, but it's pretty darn close to what I heard on the aircheck). Again, I can't A/B it with anything because I'm not working with vinyl. If it'll help, I'll be happy to forward you a copy for comparison purposes (don't know if that's against board policy, but I might as well ask).

As to "The Night Owls," I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the tip, AaronK. :)

Doug, no need to forward the "Lonesome Loser" edit. I re-edited the song myself, and my edits are much smoother than the ones on the TM Century disc. They probably just did a sloppy job.

Point taken, but I still don't know if I got it right. :)

I'm planning to edit the LP/CD version of "Lonesome Loser" to match the 45 version sometime in the next couple of months. When I get a copy of the vinyl 45, I'll let everyone know if the edits on it are smooth or not.

Just edited this one from my AM Gold 1979 collection. Many thanks to Paul, Doug and Aaron for the edit points!

i am also wondering about debbie gibson's "we could be together"...there are
a few promo cd's with several different edits and lengths: "lp edit", "radio
mix", "7" version" and "7" extended version". i am 99% sure the "radio mix" is
a shortened version of the "house" remix, and i know what the "lp edit" is,
but does anyone know what the "7" versions" are? is this the version played
on radio stations in the US?
