OK, here's a good one. While listening to this track on my iPod, O'Sullivan sings a lyric at the (1:18) mark: "I don't give a damn, and I'd like it if you can. . ."

I would swear that when I heard this on the radio in 1973, the lyric was "I don't give a hoot, and I'd like it if you can. . ."

Was a "censored" 45 (promo or commercial) serviced for this, or were my ears playing tricks on me?

Good catch! Just listened to my version from Rhino's Super Hits Of The Seventies - Vol. 11, and it says 'damn' too. Never much thought about the lyric until now.

I'm sure you'll have a definitive answer soon!

That was my source as well.

I would also assume that it's that lyric that appears in the Rhino Gilbert O'Sullivan Best Of compilation (I don't have the CD).

Doug, I heard that song constantly on my AM radio back in 1973, and I never remember hearing a "hoot" lyric - only "damn," which does appear on my commercial 45, which I just checked. But I know the 70's are your main area of expertise, sir, and I believe your memory. Turns out this is one of the very few 1973 Top 10 hits that I don't yet own a promo 45 for. I will now move it WAY up on my want list. Perhaps someone else has a promo 45 handy, and can check for a possible "hoot" lyric. Otherwise, I'll report back when I snag a copy.

I don't recall hearing or playing a hoot version of this. Fortunately, and I'm shocked, there's a mono/stereo promo copy on my shelf. Both sides say damn, although the word is slurred enough that some might be confused.

Ah, my selective hearing strikes again.

Sounds to me like I misheard it all these years, and never really paid much attention to it until I happened to take a close listen the other day.

I do remember the song was mixed a certain way on the original LP then when I first got it on CD on the "Have A Nice Day" CD, it was a different mix. My turntable is packed so I can not detail the differences. Anyone can spin the LP and compare?

After listening to the LP version from "I'm A Writer, Not A Fighter" from 1973, to my ears, it does seem like a more separated mix instrumentally. And, it still mentions the damn word.

I would slightly attribute this perception to the fact that he was born in Ireland and is perhaps intentionally invoking a "Celtic" pronunciation.

Do the 3 CDs in the database contain the single mix/separation or the album mix/separation? And do people feel the stereo separation of the instrumental tracks is different enought (between the two) to warrant a "single version" and "album version"?

I used to own the LP myself, and never noticed any significant mix difference between that and the versions on CD (Rhino, or Best Of) altho often in the CD era when digital mastering some engineers will slightly narrow a very wide mix.
The stock 45 of this was mono, so as for LP version vs. 45 version the only difference I'm aware of is the stereo/mono.
And, I did own a 45 many years ago, but dumped it once i got the LP. Seemed to me the 45 was basically same except in mono.

Don't give a Damn is on the 45, but with thick English accent. Never had any issues airing it. And in mono.

"Dumn" it is on the MAM "great hits" mono reissue 45 as well.

I just picked up the DJ 45 on "Get Down" and both sides of the promo 45 are a definitely a different mix than the LP mix. Most significant is how loudly the cymbals are boosted on both the stereo and mono sides of the 45. It gives the song a different feel than the original LP mix. On the LP mix you get a wider stereo mix (as noted above) and the handclaps are louder, but you can barely hear the cymbals.

I wouldn't call it a different version on the 45 but it's a single mix. Since it was the second single from the album they probably gave it a fresh remix before putting it out.

Both CDs that I own, the "Have A Nice Day" and "Best of" feature the SINGLE remix, matching the stereo DJ 45. I believe the mono side is simply a fold down.
