Are the 45 and LP versions different for this track? I have a CD called Pop Dreams And Rock Tracks - The Earthquake Album in which the mix of "Turn It On Again" is quite different (seems real hot to me--Phil Collins' overlapping vocals on the "turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again" close seem much more in front).
Is that a case of just being mixed differently?

Doug:
Wasn't there both a studio and a live recording for this song?

There was, John, but the version on the CD was the studio version, just mixed very differently.

Jump bumping this for John's reference--we were discussing the tune in an E-mail exchange.

Thanks, Doug, actually I had found this thread in a search for Genesis, when I asked about "Paperlate."
Wondering about "Turn It On Again", even though this didn't crack the Top 40 in 1980, a promo 45 label scan says 3:27. The digital versions run 3:51.
Mix difference? Edit? Early fade? Live vs. studio?
Ok, enough I know, haha.

Didn't the radio edit start at the keyboard downbeat (right after Phil's count)? And I think the instrumental section between the last refrain, and the closing chorus was reduced from eight to four measures. These are guesses so I can't be sure.

Bump - just wondered if there really was a radio edit as described above.

I ended up picking up a promo 45 and dubbing that. Run time is 3:27.

Trying to determine if the 45 is a different mix. If it is, it's subtle. The LP version is a little muddy, and the 45 seems a bit brighter, but it could be an EQ issue (note that I'm comparing it to the original Duke album from 1980 and not the 2007 remasters). I'd say their "Man On The Corner," which is also a subtle single mix, is a more noticeable remix than this one could be.
Nevertheless, for those looking to create the single edit from the LP version:
Remove the first 2 seconds (the hi-hat) and begin right when the guitar first comes in.
Keep the next 4 measures (16 beats). The bass will start coming in during the fourth measure (around beat #13 or so).
Remove a segment starting on the 17th beat (the beginning of the 5th measure) at the (LP's :09.7 / 45's :07.8 ) mark to when the keyboard chord comes in at the (LP's :15.2 / 45's :07.8) mark. The keyboards come in right after Phil Collins' 4-count.
There are no more edits. Start your fade at around 3:07 (during Phil's falsetto "I can see another face"). My copy fades out to zero at 3:27.

Just posting my info in response to a request.
The Duke album was reissued on CD in 1994 with the original mix but with an added bass-heavy EQ, and was remixed from the multi-tracks by Nick Davis in a 2007 CD reissue. I'm not fond of those, from the little snippets I've heard. I have the original Atlantic '80s-era CD of Duke, which sounds pretty muffled, but I think that's as good as it gets for this album.
The 45 version seems like an edit of the LP version, not a remix.
My notes say the to create the 45 edit, remove 0.00.0-0.01.9 and 0.09.8-0.14.6 of LP version from Duke, then add a 39-beat fade at 3.06.7.
These seem consistent with Plastic Steel's instructions from a few years back.
