My 1955-1996 copy of Pat's book said that there was a DJ 45 edit of this song on the CD Rock On 1989 (Cema Special Markets ROK-2-1989 S21-18695, 1996). Since I have this CD, I compared it to the LP version to see what the differences were.

At first, I though the DJ edit was just an early fade of the LP version. Nope - it's a slightly different mix with a slightly different vocal take, and can't be recreated from the LP version.

Listen for ever-so-subtle differences in the vocals in the word "how" at 1:21, the word "group" at 1:27, and the whole line of "once bitten twice shy babe" from 1:44-1:47.

In addition to that, it's a little faster - 132.8 BPM for the DJ 45 version vs. 131.6 BPM for the LP version, so the DJ 45 is sped up by about 1.0%.

The DJ 45 has a 32-beat fade from about 3:46-4:01 of the [LP version timing] or about 3:44-3:59 [DJ 45 timing, since it's sped up].

Incidentally, the best sounding version of the LP version that I've found is on Rock The First Vol. 2 (Sandstone, 1992). There's a digital clone on Guitar Rock - The Heavy '80s (Time-Life, 1995) that's exactly 0.9 dB louder.

I have the DJ edit on Monsters of Rock - Platinum Edition and it's definitely brighter sounding than the LP version.

So, the commercial 45 / 7" and album versions of this song are identical, and the DJ edit is a minor remix / retake?

Yes, the promo version has a completely re-recorded lead vocal.
