Does anyone know if the long 6:11 promo 45 version was censored or not for The Who's "Who Are You?" I've certainly heard the uncensored version on classic rock stations in the past. Perhaps the FCC doesn't realize that the "f" bomb is in there.

Hi Aaaron,

It doesn't specifically answer your question, but the AOR 12" (similar time) had not only the two f-word lines excised--but it also had the commercial 45s "Who the HELL are you" line removed. (The LP versions had the f-word, but not the h-word.)

Andy, I do have that (6:11) promo 45 version, and I was gonna check it later on today. But your above notations are EXACTLY the same as what I recall being on that long promo 45, when we reviewed it at the station back in 1978. So I'll just go ahead and consider Aaron's original question "already answered!"

Thanks for the info, guys! For the long promo, is this a case where the band re-sang some of the lyrics, or did MCA do some clever editing to remove the offensive lines? (In the LP version, the "f" word appears at 2:14 and 5:40; in the 45 version, the "h" word appears at 1:56, and the line was re-sung for this version.)

Jim, is your short promo version that same as the commercial 45, containing the word "hell?"

The original promo album that was sent to radio stations also had the 6:11 edit which edited around the F words. It's not obvious on the label except that it looks like someone pasted over the 6:11 time on top of the original time. When those promo copies wore out stations just started playing the uncensored version.

While radio stations played this song uncensored for years, after the Janet Jackson incident most major radio groups now play some kind of edit before 10pm. (you can play it uncensored 10pm-6am) As to not be accused of censorship, CC stations have available the exact MCA edit. CBS made their own. Others are out there.

I was just able to hear the (6:11) promo edit, and the actual run time is (6:06). For the second chorus, they dubbed in part of the first chorus to get rid of the "f" bomb. For its appearance later in the song, they just cut out about 12 seconds rather than replacing it with an earlier chorus.

Another funny thing I had never noticed before is that there are two different mixes of the long, uncensored version. When I first tried to re-create the edit, I was using the remastered edition of Who Are You, but the mix isn't quite the same. I then tried using the version on The Ultimate Collection, and it worked perfectly.

If you compare those two versions, you'll hear that the loud guitar note at (2:28) is off to the right on one mix but centered on the other one. Another way I could tell was that the last "you" that Roger sings is faded out from the mix slightly earlier on the Who Are You CD. The last note is also faded earlier on that CD, which is why it only runs (6:16). There were a couple other very subtle mix differences, too. The bottom line is that you'll need the (6:20) version to have the correct LP version.

While I'm on the subject, do the versions of "Behind Blue Eyes" from the remastered Who's Next and Ultimate Collection CDs differ, or is it just that the latter is a bit more hissy? (I'm not referring to the alternate take on Who's Next.)

My commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:22), but an actual time of (3:26). In 1978, our MCA record rep also provided us with a Polydor import stock 45 for "Who Are You" (which I still have). It did include the 2 instances of the "f" word, and my then-bosses at the radio station (we were still on AM in 1978) chose to "spike in" this version at night, despite the language, desiring to have us sound "edgier" and "more hip", and gambling that the FCC and/or listener complaints wouldn't come in - and neither did. This UK 45 version has no listed time, but an actual time of (5:03).

Would that (5:03) version possibly be the "edit of the LP version" noted in the database for these CDs:

(S) (5:02) MCA 1496 Greatest Hits
(S) (5:02) MCA 8031 Who's Better, Who's Best
(S) (4:58) MCA 11020 Thirty Years Of Maximum R&B
(S) (4:58) MCA 11462 My Generation - Very Best Of
(S) (5:03) Geffen B0001836 Then And Now

I'm a little confused about the two mixes floating
around.

The loud stand-alone guitar note at 2:28 is in both
channels for 20th Century Masters The Millennium
Collection
(1999; 6:16 LP version) and My
Generation The Very Best Of
(1996; 4:58 UK 45
version).

The same note is in the right channel for Who's
Better Who's Best
(1988; 5:02 UK 45 version) and
Aaron's (undoubtedly accurate) recreation of the 6:06
long promo version).

Can anyone confirm what the original vinyl mixes had?
I know The Who had some remixes floating around in
their catalog, but I don't know their stuff nearly
well enough to discern the original mix from a modern
remix.

The Internet tells me that "Who Are You" was remixed
in 1996, so I'd bet that everything pre-1996 was the
original mix.

So my guess is that the original mixes had the loud
stand-alone guitar note at 2:28 in the right channel.
Still can't confirm with vinyl, though.

I found a website that claims that the original LP mix
ran 6:22, the 1996 remix of the LP version ran 6:16,
and there's a "lost verse" mix running 6:18 that
includes lyrics in the second verse which were
different from the released version. What a mess.
