My promo CD single for this song (PRO-CD-3448) has 5 cuts. My latest Whitburn book lists (5:19) as this song's timing, so perhaps cut 3 of this promo CD single was also the commercial 45 version:
1-(On the CD itself, this version is described as "7" Version With Fade", but on the jewel case insert, it simply says "7" Version") (listed 5:06; actual 5:04)
2-(7" Remix/Edit) (listed & actual 5:41)
3-(7" Dance Edit) (listed 5:19; actual 5:21)
4-(12" Dance Mix) (listed 7:50; actual 7:52)
5-(12" Club Version) (listed & actual 6:35)

Thanks for all the great promo information you've been posting lately! The 45 version for "Like A Prayer" is actually cut 1 of your promo CD, but it has a later fade and is simply called 7" Version. Cuts 2 & 3 are both completely different mixes, and I'm not sure if they even showed up on a physical 7" single.
I believe Brian posted info on where to find the 45 version in another post, which is on the US 3" CD single and possibly an import compilation.

Hi guys! Track 2 on the promo CD (7" Remix/Edit) was the B side of the promo only US 7" single. Track 3 wasn't released on any other format. It does have very similar running time as the 7" version.
You can find the 45 version without fade on the commercial US 3" CD single or selected pressings of the original Japan 3" CD single (some contained an early fade of the album version).

my commercial 45 issued as sire 27539 contains, on the A-side, the 7" version with a stated running time of 5:19 but it actually runs 5:21....

Yeah, there was a commercial CD3 issued in the US that had the 7" Version. The only other place it's been issued on CD (to my knowlege) is the Canadian 2-disc comp "Time 100: The Music of Our Lives, Vol. 2."
The 7" Remix/Edit was issued on the Japanese "Remixed Prayers" EP. The 7" Dance Edit is exclusive to the promo.

does the usa promo cd single actually contain the 7" version from the vinyl 45?....because jim's description above would lead one to believe not....

It features the 7" Version With Fade, not the full 7" Version found on commercial US releases. As the title suggests, it's identical save for an earlier fade.
The back insert of the aforementioned promo CD is confusing as it refers to the first track as simply the 7" Version, but the CD itself correctly lists track one as 7" Version With Fade.

This is the domestic (US) 3" CD featuring the correct single mix.
There are 3" releases from other countries, the UK/German release features the same 7" Version With Fade found on the US promo CD.
As previously mentioned, the Japanese 3" release can feature either the full, correct 7" version or an unlisted version that is the LP Version with an early fade. The latter is also found on the 1997 Madonna 3" CD Single Collection box set from Japan.
