I'm back from the warehouse with another find that I didn't know existed: When I'm Dead and Gone, DJ 45, 2:52/3:35 stereo both sides. The 2:52 edit cuts off the second instrumental section near the end. Basically after the first break, and they sing the hook again, you'll hear three symbol hits. After that point, the edit jumps to the end of the song where they are singing nah nah nah... nah nah nah.. and it fades out.

The 2:52 side runs 2:53.

SPRO 6100 on the 2:52 side, SPRO 6099 on the 3:35 side.

My commercial 45 for this song, which is stereo and confirmed as Capitol 3014, has a listed time of (3:35), but an actual time of (3:39).

Yeah, I've got that one too, except my copy has the labels reversed. Don't think I ever heard the short version on the radio, maybe because that instrumental solo (mandolin?) really "makes" the song.

I also always played the long version of the promo for the very reason that Hykker stated.

"When I'm Dead And Gone" had been big at my college station, and early 1974 paid a retro double dividend. Gallagher & Lyle's "Shine A Light" (A & M 1518) was very reminiscent of their McGuinness Flint hit. The mandolin was used as more of a rock instrument here, and was accompanied by a great harmonica riff. The DJ 45 ran the full 3:44 (3:38 actual) on the stereo side, with a remixed mono 3:02 (3:01 actual) edit on the flip.

At about the same time, Capitol issued a one-off cover of "When I'm Dead And Gone" by Carone (Capitol 3874.) This version was a wee bit poppier, and had a more driven, commercial feel to it than the McGuinness Flint original.

Sorry to say that neither the Gallagher & Lyle nor the Carone 45 ever caught any significant attention. But if you like "When I'm Dead And Gone," they're worth checking out.

I know Bill gave instructions, but I'm still a little unclear on where exactly to edit. Can you pinpoint times?

I don't recall what's edited, Doug, but I'll send you what
I have.
