FYI, Just did a comparison between a vinyl copy of this song and the version on Arista's Perfect 10, and have concluded the 45 cannot be recreated from the CD version. There seems to be parts on 45 not on CD.

LOL, on second thought, after listening to the vinyl dub again, I realized there's no Michael on it. The instrumental parts I thought that were on the 45, and not on the CD, were actually where Michael would sing.
What did they call those 45's... Dub versions, or something?

I didn't realize that this was Jermaine's biggest CHR airplay hit until just now. It was his only CHR top 10, reaching #6 in R&R in June of 1984. The question is, what was the source for radio stations?
The vocal version was the b-side of "Do What You Do," and I didn't think that record had yet been released. The dub version that John references above was on the b-side of "Dynamite," which peaked in September of '84 in R&R. "Do What You Do" peaked in December of '84.
As far as the vocal version on the 45 goes, it has a printed time of 4:03 and an actual time of 4:18. I don't currently have a CD copy to compare with.

To John & Aaron,
I hope I am answering your questions (albeit in a roundabout way).
There was no commercial 45 when TMIND was released to radio. There WAS a promo 12" [Arista ADP-9189] of TMIND issued to radio a coupla weeks before the self-titled album came out. This was not yet a common practice, but Arista did not have the clearance from Epic to release it commercially as a single (but they knew it was an obvious hit). So Arista worked it as an album cut up the R&R charts as the first emphasis track (although that term had not been coined yet).

Thanks, Andy! Great info! Is the promo 12" version any different than the album version?

To Aaron:
It was the same version (although the 12-inch promo had better fidelity as the album was narrow-grooved).

I looked for this in the database and found nothing. So is the 45 version with
Michael vocals in it? Is it available in any CD?

This song appears on Jermaine's Playlist: The Very Best Of CD release. It is the duet vocal version and runs 4:24.

That's because it never charted on Billboard's Hot 100 and was never released as a single.

But the duet peaked at #6 in 1984 on the Radio & Records singles chart. This is one of the entries in the new Record Research book that doesn't appear in any of their Billboard chart books. If you listened to radio in 1984 you heard the song (whether it was an LP cut and/or eventually issued as a b-side). You're correct as to why it doesn't appear in the online database.

It also appears as Track 3 on the Bonus Track Version of
the Dynamite album where it also runs 4:24.
Aaron mentioned earlier in the thread that the vocal
version of the 45 runs 4:18. Does that mean you'd have to
fade the 4:24 version early?

Just FYI, it peaked at #7 on the Gavin Report's Top 40
airplay chart and appears on nearly 500 radio station
surveys in the ARSA database. It's a shame Billboard
never charted it on the Hot 100 as it was a bona-fide hit
at the time.

Did this song get any recurrent airplay across the
country? I started listening to radio late-summer '84 and
don't remember ever hearing this song. I know the
Minneapolis Top 40s played it for a bit based on the ARSA
database and at least one aircheck, but if I did hear it
at all that summer, it wasn't enough to remember (although
I was only 8 years old). I definitely know I've never
heard it on the radio since then.

The station I was a weekender at in 1984 didn't play the
song at all, as we had transitioned away from Top 40 to AC
earlier that year (a shame since '84 was such a great year
for music, but we were an AM, and management decided to
pursue an older audience). I don't recall hearing it
anywhere else once its airplay run ended.

IIRC, the song got more play on KDWB than on WLOL (mostly
May/June of 1984). I don't recall much recurrent airplay
at all. This wasn't unusual, as 1984 was a banner year
for hot current Top 40 hits that left little room for
many recurrents at all. By later that summer, radio had
moved on to Jermaine's "Dynamite" and "State Of Shock" by
the Jacksons. I think listeners were starting to suffer
some MJ burnout by this time as well, as he had pretty
much owned the airwaves for 18 months from late 1982
until the summer of 1984.

I'm not sure MJ burnout had begun by 1984, but given the
frequency of new releases by him, there wasn't a lot of
room in playlists for his older songs too. And this was
before Janet came on the scene adding yet another Jackson
to the mix.
Add to that the fact that many CHRs in the '82-86 time
frame played very few (if any) recurrent and little or no
gold.

Well, I know that I was certainly starting to grow a
little tired of hearing him all the time. Not only the
Thriller singles, but you also had Rockwell's "Somebody's
Watching Me," the Motown re-release of "Farewell My
Summer Love," the whole Jacksons Victory tour
hype and the Pepsi commercial fiasco. By late 1984 I was
ready for an MJ break!

How is it that there was never an extended version, club remix, etc. ever released of this track? Especially with it charting in the clubs, you would think they'd want more than four minutes.
Especially if you're releasing this to radio on a 12", you'd think one side might have the LP version, and the other side an extended version for club play...
To my knowledge even the expanded re-releases of the album don't have an extended version, so it wasn't even attempted in 1984?

Nope. A quick glance at all 12-inch releases worldwide for the song shows just the album version on all of them. Then again, Beat It, PYT and Thriller didn't have extended mixes, either.
