Based on current database info, the CD/LP version of Ne-Yo's "Because of You" runs 4:25. However, I have the song on the various artist CD Now 25 (UMG Recordings B0009055), which runs 3:44. There are presently no database comments explaining this time discrepency. I couldn't find a commercial single download of "Because of You" running 3:44 on I-Tunes, but I did locate one, a "remix", on MusicGiants.com. Judging by the track's 30-second audio preview available at the website, this "remix" doesn't match the version on the Now 25 disc. So does anyone know where the latter version comes from?

I purchased the 3:44 "radio edit" from the Canadian iTunes site in April 2007, but I see that it is no longer available. So it was most likely at one point also available from the U.S. iTunes site. It's not the first time I've noticed iTunes deleting a song's single version.

Yep, the copy I downloaded from iTunes here in the states on 4/25/07 is also the 3:44 radio edit (it was the digital single, which I assume was deleted once the full album was released).

Thanks for the input, Paul and mstgator. So it looks like the 3:44 radio edit is actually the "45 version". Now we just need to compare it to the version on the Now 25 to see if they're identical. (My money says they are.)
Man, I'll tell ya... Now that commercial singles are primarily only made available as digital downloads, it's going to become much more difficult to document these singles for historical purposes once they're deleted. It's not like you can just go out and buy them as a "used copy" on eBay, or track them down by catalog number!

Hmm, so this 3:44 radio edit is not the same as the 3:44 Remix Featuring Kanye West? 'Cause that's what's on MusicGiants (and is still on iTunes). It's easy to identify, as Kanye says it's a remix at the beginning of the song.
Did it have this cover, mstgator?

One more thing I should point out... The 3:44 version on the Now 25 CD does not contain any rap.

We have the official CD promo single on Def Jam 16708:
1. Clean (runs 3:44)
2. Instrumental
We also have the commercial 12" on Def Jam 008678, the contents are identical to the promo CD.
No mention or audio of Kanye West/any remix.

Nope, definitely not the remix. No Kanye anywhere on the song. Here's the cover:
For the record, the track I purchased is actually listed as 3:49, but the last five seconds are dead air.

I find it interesting that the promo CD single labels Track 1 as "Clean" because I've never heard a version of "Because of You" containing any lyrics that could be deemed dirty.

I just ordered the promo CD. The cover is exactly like the iTunes cover that mstgator posted.
