Hey all,

I have on vinyl what I believe is an original pressing of Pat Benatar's debut LP, In the Heat of the Night. On this early pressing, there is a much more new wave sounding mix of We Live For Love that is missing all the lead guitars in the verses, with a pulsing bassline and more prominent synth lines. I have never been able to find this version on a Pat Benatar compilation CD. Neil Gerardo even mentions the original version in the liner notes of one of her boxed sets. Has anyone EVER found this original mix of the song on CD, import or domestic? Any clues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Budaniel:

I'm glad you bring up this mix of Pat Benatar's "We Live for Love" because I've been meaning to ask about it myself. You'll be happy to know it's available on Benatar's U.K. import CD compilation Best Shots (Chrysalis CCD 1538) and runs 3:53. This disc is currently out of print but there are copies up for auction on eBay all the time. This is also the only CD I've ever seen that contains the 45 mix of "Hit Me with Your Best Shot".

My question is, did this radically different mix of "We Live for Love" appear on all of Pat Benatar's self-titled LP pressings, or just some of them? And just to be clear, is the commercial 45 version the same as the one appearing on all domestic CD releases to date?

The UK edition of "Best Shots" isn't out of print, though -- I just bought it new a few months ago, and it's in stock at Amazon.co.uk.

thanks for the info Todd. This UK import of "Best Shots" is different than the US compilation of the same name? BEcause I had that version and it was the standard guitar version on there. I also don't see a listing for this UK version on Amazon, which is unusual.

This is what Neil Gerardo says in the liner notes for this track on Synchronistic Wanderings:

"It was the last song we recorded for HEAT. Also the original version had a different guitar figure that i later changed a couple weeks after the record was released. Only the very early copies of HEAT on vinyl have the original guitar version."

I assume he means the version that I've been looking for.

I didn't see your post Brian. Thanks. I checked it out on amazon uk and saw that it was different. I've ordered it from them. Thanks again all.

PS, Todd,

I had the 45 way back when I was a wee child, and yes, it's the guitar
heavy mix that is found on all current domestic CDs.

Got some news guys. I'm still waiting for my copy of "Best Shots" to ship from Amazon UK, but I was on the site and I listened to a sample of "We Live for Love" from that disc. The version on this disc is NOT the alternate version first released on the In the Heat of the Night vinyl LP. It is a complete synthesizer and drum machine overhaul remix done in 1985 that was on the b-side of the import 12" of We Belong (confused yet?).

I'm not cancelling my order, however, because I've been wanting this version on CD as well, because it is another excellent mix of this track. But, I am back to square one with the ORIGINAL cut of We Live For Love that was only on early vinyl pressings of the debut album and seems to never have been released on CD.

Hey guys,

the CD finally arrived today. I'm amazed out how much different the intro to the 7" version of Hit Me With Your Best Shot sounds I don't think I ever even heard this version on the radio! Also, in case anyone is interested, this CD also includes the radio version of We Belong, which includes the intro vocals of Pat singing, "We Belong, We Belong to the light".

Sorry to bump an old thread, but just wanted to clarify that the original mix of We Live For Love has never been made available on compact disc. It can be found on original pressings of In The Heat Of The Night on vinyl, and international singles for the song. It was remixed for US release.

I only revive this thread because of the last few Pat Benatar threads. Are there any updates as to where a CD copy of this version might be found (that being the original "new wave" LP version?) I have the LP, but it's a bit worn, and hard to find again.

There are no CD issues of this, original 45 pressings and the first pressing Chrysalis LP only. And bloody hard to find a nice copy.

Sniff - feel like I could cry...lol. I prefer vinyl, but it would nice to get a scratch free and wear free copy. The problem with any version of this song is that the distortion appears high in the upper mids (3-6 KHz). So it's hard to get a "clean" sound to this record.

In addition to the first pressing of the US In The Heat Of The Night LP, I have the original mix mastered at 45rpm on it's own side of 12" vinyl:

"We Live For Love" (UK 12" w/poster)
CHS 12 2403

Side A:
WE LIVE FOR LOVE

Side B:
I NEED A LOVER
IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW HOW TO LOVE ME

This actually sounds better than the ITHOTN LP.

The database notes "single mix" and "LP mix" on "We Live For Love" I have compared the original DJ single with the "LP" mix on a couple of CDs and neither the mono or stereo side of the DJ copy sounds any different to me. I understand that there was an original LP mix as described here, but what's the difference between the commonly issued LP version and 45 versions?

For anyone curious about the original LP mix of this song who've never heard it, I've put it on youtube.

I own a 1980 promo 12" single (Chrysalis CHS-20-PDJ) for this song. It
has a sticker in the upper right corner, with a b/w photo of Pat, the artist
and song title in capitals, with a "Specially Mixed For Rock Radio" note just
below. It features the same, listed (3:35) version on both sides.

Although Rock Radio may have been the original inspiration for Neil's
remix, what is included sounds exactly like the 45 version to me. So
clearly, there was a strong, rather immediate consensus among all parties
that this new remix should be marketed as the "definitive" version.

I just wanted to clarify its exact contents here, as the promo 12" single's
sticker description infers that this is a unique mix to the LP version. Which
it was, initially, as compared against the earliest-pressed LP copies. But
anyone not knowing this track's full story might be confused reading it
today, as to exactly what mix is included on it - the 45 and later-pressed
LPs mix.

DJPaulT recently posted the "Original LP New Wave Mix" (apparently a title he made up) from the 1980 UK 12", as mentioned by user Underground Dub.

As it turns out, this version is a unique single mix. It is closer to the 1st LP version than the more common 2nd LP version, but it is not quite the same.

For comparison, budaniel's YouTube post has the original LP version (despite showing the 12" artwork).

The 12" is "wetter" with the reverb, especially on the snare, and EQ'd brighter.
At 0:15 the repeating synth note is panned left on the LP, center on the 12".
At 0:50 the 12" doubles the drums to create a fill before the cymbal crash. No such echo on the LP.
The 12" fades out early, by 3:46 (printed time 3:45), whereas the LP keeps going for about 7 more seconds (~3:53 on the rip I have).

It seems the same version is on the UK 7" as the 12", so I would just call it the "UK single version".

So there's:
• 3:53 1979 1st album version (rare)
• 3:53 1979 2nd album version (common; has rhythm guitar added at 0:15)
• 3:46 1980 UK single version (remix based on 1st album version)
• 3:34 1980 US single version (early fade of 2nd album version)
• 3:54 '84 Re-Mix a.k.a. We Live for Love '85 (a completely different mix)

According to Steve Hoffman,
the original LP mix was "removed and razor-bladed shortly after the album was first released."

I tried to find both of these on YouTube, but failed. Could you please post
the links? thanks.
